Evidence of new Mac Pro, MacBook Air models coming this week

There may be new Mac Pro and MacBook Air models coming this week featuring upgrades like Sandy Bridge processors and Thunderbolt ports, a source has informed 9to5Mac. The source supplied model numbers for four new MacBook Airs and four new Mac Pro?s.

The MacBook Air model numbers almost certainly represent two 11-inch models and two 13-inch models. This would mirror the current lineup somewhat, with the ?upper? options likely being available with beefed up specs. The upgrades are rumored to be mostly internal, with the new MacBook?s getting an upgrade to the newer, more powerful Sandy Bridge processors from Intel. One external change will be the addition of a Thunderbolt port that will allow connection of peripherals like speedy hard drives and external monitors.

Model numbers for new Mac Pros have apparently surfaced as well, indicating that a refresh of Apple?s upper end desktop machines may be coming this week as well. There are four models including one Server model, although details about specifications are scarce at this point. Obviously, Thunderbolt capability is probably a given.

New Mac Pros and MacBook Airs just in time for the release of Mac OS X Lion this month would be good timing. This would enable Apple to ship these new Macs with OS X Lion pre-installed.

Hardware 25 - What, no Tanks?

Hardware 25 - What, no Tanks?

Posted on 8th Jul 2011 at 14:20 by Paul Goodhead with 7 comments

It's been a while since our last podcast so James, Paul, Antony and Harry had plenty to talk about when they took their seats in the studio this week.

First on the agenda was James and Paul's trip to Computex in Taiwan, where they got to see what the industry had planned for the next six months. Certain things were of particular interest to us though such as the LGA2011 boards being shown at the exhibition.

The other big slice of news that's hit since our last podcast is the launch of AMD's new desktop Lynx processors. The APUs (as AMD calls them) are potentially interesting for those looking for a low cost rig that's also capable of gaming.

Finally, we sneak in a little discussion about Intel's new 50-core maths co-processor card and attempt to answer a reader question about thermal compound.

As always, we've also set up our weekly competition, the lucky winner of which will walk away with a brand new Corsair VX550W PSU.

Hardware 25 - What, no Tanks?

How Google Will Balkanize Your Social Life

Google launched its Facebook competitor, Google+, just over a week ago now. Even though sign-ups have so far been limited to a fraction of Facebook's 750 million users, it already appears that, for a lot of people, Google+ will become the other social network they need to use. Why? Because a significant fraction of their friends will force them to.

It's not just that Google+ has 10-person video hangouts, or that Google+ is magically free of privacy worries. It's that Google has created the opportunity for Facebook-weary people to perform what one called "a reset on Facebook," allowing them to escape from Facebook members they've friended over the years but don't really want to interact with?and can't quite bring themselves to defriend.

The killer feature of Google+ is that, unlike Facebook, LinkedIn, or most other social networks, there's no such thing as a friend request. Users can create groups of friends, called Circles in Google+ terminology. These circles can include both other Google+ users and nonusers who receive status updates via e-mail rather than via the site. As a Google+ user, you can share your status updates and favorite links with those in one or more of these easily created circles, or with everyone. And you can see what other users have shared with you, or with everyone, in a Facebook-like feed that runs down the middle of the page.

But you'll never be put in the awkward situation of receiving a friend request from someone you don't really want to be Google+ friends with. Nor will you have to face the awkward decision of whether or not to defriend a former confidant with whom you've fallen out. Just remove them from your circles, which are never revealed to other users. Other than that, Google+ looks and behaves a lot like Facebook.

Sure, Facebook has ways to filter, block, and organize other members so you don't have to share every update with, say, your parents. But on Google+, your parents can't send you a friend request, and the Circles system makes it one-click easy to share a tasteless video clip or a story of public drunkenness with your college friends without having to customize the update first. There's no way yet to share a post with everyone in your Best Buddies circle except those who are also in your Coworkers circle, but it would be easy to add to the system before Google takes Google+ out of its limited-membership trial period.

The Caucus: Obama Raises Pressure for Ambitious Budget Plan

12:57 p.m. | Updated President Obama on Monday morning challenged Republicans to live up to their demands to cut the nation?s deficit and address its long-term debt by enacting spending cuts, revenue increases and changes to entitlement programs.

?Now is the time to deal with these issues,? Mr. Obama said at the start of a news conference at the White House. ?If not now, when??

The president also called on Congressional Democrats to be open to a deal that would makes changes to entitlement programs like Social Security and Medicare, which some parts of the caucus have strictly opposed.

Mr. Obama said he is continuing to push lawmakers for ?as large a deal as possible? and said that Republicans should work toward the goal that they have said they wanted for months.

?I?ve been hearing from my Republican friends for quite some time that it is a moral imperative to tackle our debt and our deficit,? Mr. Obama said. ?What I?ve said to them is, ?let?s go.??

Mr. Obama said he would not consider a short-term, stop-gap solution to raise the debt ceiling. ?This is the United States of America. We don?t manage our affairs in three month increments.?

The news conference, his second in less than two weeks, came just hours before the president was to meet for a third time with Congressional leaders in an effort to reach a deal to raise the nation?s debt ceiling. The decision to take questions from reporters again reflects a new approach to press relations in recent months, as the president seeks to use the bully pulpit in a way that Republicans cannot.

Mr. Obama?s tone was a stark contrast to his previous press conference. In late June, Mr. Obama adopted a stern approach toward his Republican rivals, wagging his finger at them for failing to lead and mocking their frequent summertime breaks.

But on Monday, after a series of face-to-face negotiations over the past week, the president described the Congressional leadership in more sympathetic ways. He called them ?sincere? and said they are in a ?difficult? position as they attempt to sell a compromise to their rank-and-file members.

?Part of what the Republican Caucus generally needs to recognize is that American democracy works when people listen to each other; we?re willing to give each other the benefit of the doubt; we assume the patriotism and good intentions of the other side, and we?re willing to make some sensible compromises to solve big problems,? Mr. Obama said. ?And I think that there are members of that caucus who haven?t fully arrived at that realization yet.?

The president?s tone about his Democratic allies changed as well. Mr. Obama appeared eager to demonstrate that the speaker?s difficulties with conservatives was matched on his own side by his willingness to talk tough to his own liberal constituency.

Politically, that gives Mr. Obama an opportunity to present himself to independent voters as a leader who is interested in getting something done in gridlocked Washington. He said he is ?sympathetic? to the concerns of his liberal supporters but said their priorities cannot be achieved without tackling the nation?s debt.

?If you?re a progressive who cares about the integrity of Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid and believes that it is part of what makes our country great, that we look after our seniors and we look after the most vulnerable, then we have an obligation to make sure that we make those changes that are required to make it sustainable over the long term,? he said.

Answering questions, the president said he was eager to find a solution to the nation?s debt problem even if that means that both parties have to accept changes that they do not like.

?It?s not going to get easier. It?s going to get harder,? Mr. Obama said. ?So we might as well do it now. Pull off the Band-Aid. Eat our peas. Now is the time to do it.?

He added that both parties need to ?step up.?

?Let?s do it,? he said. ?I?m prepared to do it. I?m prepared to take on significant heat from my party to get something done.?

Mr. Obama repeatedly praised Mr. Boehner for his willingness to consider a broader package to reduce the debt. But he said the political pressures on the House speaker were clearly affecting Mr. Boehner?s ability to cut a deal.

?The leaders in the room at a certain point have to step up and do the right thing regardless of the voices in our parties,? he said. ?It?s going to take some work on his side. But look, it?s also going to take some work on our side to get this done.?

Mr. Obama rejected criticism by Republicans that his party was eager for ?massive, job-killing tax cuts? that would harm the economic recovery. He noted that any tax increases would only go into effect after 2013.

?No one is talking about raising taxes right now,? the president said. ?I have bent over backwards to work with the Republicans that comes up with a formulation that doesn?t require them to vote sometime in the next month to increase taxes.?

The president offered a critique of the political pressures in both parties that make it harder for lawmakers and the White House to reach a deal.

Of the Republican presidential candidates who have said they oppose an increase in the debt ceiling, the president said: ?For them to say we shouldn?t be raising the debt ceiling is irresponsible. They know better.?

But he said the Tea Party movement has genuinely made it more difficult for Congressional leaders like Mr. Boehner to compromise.

?The politics that swept him into the speakership were good for a midterm election. They are tough for governing,? Mr. Obama said. ?American democracy works when people listen to each other, we are willing to give each other the benefit of the doubt, we assume the patriotism, good intentions of the other side, and we are willing to compromise.?

House Speaker John A. Boehner said over the weekend that he would no longer try to achieve a large-scale deal involving as much as $4.5 trillion in spending cuts along with broad-based tax reform and changes to entitlement programs. Instead, Republican lawmakers are pushing for a scaled-back plan.

But Mr. Obama on Monday continued to urge lawmakers to consider the larger approach. And he challenged Republicans to come back to the White House with a deal they think can pass in both chambers of Congress. That may be a challenge as both sides are far apart on the key components of a deal.

Conservative Republicans in the House, led by Representative Eric Cantor of Virginia, the House majority leader, have balked at the notion of a deal that would increase revenue to the government, fearing they could be accused of going back on their pledge to oppose tax increases.

Democrats, meanwhile, have expressed opposition to any deal negotiated by Mr. Obama that would cut benefits to Medicare or Social Security recipients.

Apple has released iOS 5 Beta 3 to developers

Apple has today released the third version of its iOS 5 beta. The new version should offer some stability improvements and bug fixes.

The iOS 5 beta is available for download now on the Apple Developer site. Note that Apple requires that you have a developer account and a device registered on the site in order to download and install iOS 5.

In addition to iOS 5 beta 2, which is build number 9A5259f, Apple has also released iTunes 10.5 beta 3 for Mac and a new iCloud beta for Lion as well as Xcode 4.2 Developer Preview 3.

Devices running iOS 5 beta 3 can sync with iTunes over WiFi, but the new version of iTunes beta is not compatible with devices running beta 2. That means that you need to sync your device before upgrading iTunes, upgrade your device, then sync it with iTunes again to restore from your backup.

There are a host of minor bug fixes, but these are the salient points:

  • After restoring, you may not be able to back up again because the device still thinks it?s restoring. To workaround this issue try syncing apps or media that are missing form iTunes or try deleting your iCloud account and adding it back.
  • If you delete your backup, the feature will be disabled but settings may still indicate that it is enabled and you will have to toggle the BackUp to Cloud switch in Settings.
  • For compatibility reasons, this version of the iOS 5 beta requires that all files be backed up again, instead of only those files that have changed since your last backup. This may cause a warning that your account is over quota. In case the warning occurs, you can delete your oldest backup to free up space and then initiate a backup.
  • iCloud Storage
  • During the iOS 5 beta period, any documents stored on the servers might be purged periodically before GM. Therefore, it is highly recommended that you do not store any critical documents or information on the servers.
  • iMessage beta 3 will be unable to communicate with iMessage users on beta 1. It works between beta 3 and beta 2.
  • Modal alerts don?t appear for iMessages.

iOS 5 is the next major revision to Apple?s software for iPhone, iPod, Apple TV and iPad devices. The new OS is slated for release in the fall of this year. You can see our complete rundown of the iOS announcements at WWDC here. We?ve also got a closer look at some of the features of iOS like iMessagesTwitterSetup and Notification CenteriCloud and alerts.

Imported hardware entering U.S. with hidden malware

A top Department of Homeland Security (DHS) official has admitted that software and hardware components imported to the U.S. are being deliberately preloaded with spyware and malware. The revelation was made in a testimony before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, where acting deputy undersecretary of the DHS National Protection and Programs Directorate Greg Schaffer told Rep. Jason Chaffetz that he's aware of instances when this has happened.

Schaffer was discussing an Obama-backed proposal to tighten monitoring on computer equipment imported for critical government and communications infrastructure. He didn't elaborate on where these components are coming from, or if consumer electronics like smartphones and laptops have been affected, but clearly supply chain risk management is an issue that the government is focused on amid a rise in cyber threats.

It's unclear how widespread the issue really is. There have been cases in the past where software and hardware components ship out of factories infected with malware, but they are generally considered unintentional, originated by an infected machine from within the company. What Schaffer suggests is an intentional and possibly targeted attack sponsored by foreign governments to get a hold of classified information.

While the threat of a contaminated supply chain may be real, poor security measures have also played a role in the recent wave of cyber attacks on large U.S. companies and government agencies.

Google search blocks 11 million .co.cc websites to fight malware

Google has blocked all .co.cc websites from its search results because the domain has been found to be too "spammy." The .cc top-level domain, which belongs to the Cocos (Keeling) Islands, and regular .cc websites are unaffected by Google's changes, according to The Register.

The .co.cc second-level domain, meanwhile, is not officially authorized (like .co.uk or .com.au). Instead, it is owned by an independent Korean company. The firm claims to have 11,383,736 registered domains and 5,731,278 user accounts. If those numbers are accurate, that means Google has blocked one of the largest domain extensions in the world (bigger than both .org and .uk by over 2 million domains), or simply put, 11 million websites in one fell swoop.

"We absolutely do try to be granular, but I wanted to mention that if we see a very large fraction of sites on a specific freehost be spammy or low-quality, we do reserve the right to take action on the freehost as a whole," Matt Cutts, head of Google's web spam team, said in a statement. "I think most savvy search/SEO folks would understand this completely, but I figure it's better to over-communicate than under-communicate."

Google considers the Korean company a freehost, which is a domain that will let anyone register a site under it. There are many high-quality freehosts out there (such as wordpress.com), but there are of course poor ones, like .co.cc, according to the search giant. The .co.cc registry offers single sub-domains for free, and also lets you register 15,000 addresses at once for a mere $1,000 (just seven cents a name).

The Anti-Phishing Working Group (APWG) recently released a 29-page report titled "Global Phishing Survey: Trends and Domain Name Use in 2H 2010" (PDF). The report revealed that the .cc top-level domain hosted 4,963 phishing attacks in the second half of 2010, almost twice the number found under any other extension, according to the APWG.

"Google's automated malware scanning systems detect sites that distribute malware," a Google spokesperson said in a statement. "To help protect users we recently modified those systems to identify bulk subdomain services which are being abused. In some severe cases our systems may now flag the whole bulk domain."
