Palin Joins Debate on Heated Speech With Words That Stir New Controversy

As she sought to defend herself and seize control of a debate that has been boiling for days, Ms. Palin awakened a new controversy by invoking a phrase fraught with religious symbolism about the false accusation used by anti-Semites of Jews murdering Christian children. It was unclear whether Ms. Palin was aware of the historical meaning of the phrase.

?Acts of monstrous criminality stand on their own,? Ms. Palin said. ?Especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence that they purport to condemn. That is reprehensible.?

The video from Ms. Palin, running nearly eight minutes, was recorded in her home television studio in Alaska and released early Wednesday morning. Her words dominated the political landscape for nearly 12 hours before President Obama arrived in Tucson to speak at a memorial service honoring the six dead and 14 injured in the shootings.

For Ms. Palin, a former Alaska governor, the video provided one of the clearest signs yet that she is carefully tending to her image as she decides whether to seek the 2012 Republican presidential nomination. And it showed her continued determination to do so on her own terms and under her own control, without responding to questions or appearing in a public forum.

She spoke in a somber tone, absent the witticisms often woven into her political speeches, as she sought to contain a debate that had linked her ? unfairly, she argued ? with the assassination attempt on Representative Gabrielle Giffords, Democrat of Arizona.

In the midterm elections last year, Ms. Palin used a map with cross hairs over several swing Congressional districts, which Ms. Giffords highlighted in a television interview at the time as an example of overheated political speech. In the video statement, Ms. Palin rejected criticism of the map, and sought to cast that criticism as a broader indictment of the basic rights to free speech exercised by people of all political persuasions.

?We know violence isn?t the answer,? Ms. Palin said, sitting against a backdrop of a fireplace and an American flag. ?When we take up our arms, we?re talking about our votes.?

The video stirred an emotional response from some Democratic lawmakers, Jewish groups and even some fellow Republicans, who said it was in poor taste for Ms. Palin to deliver her statement on a day that was devoted to remembering victims of last weekend?s shooting. The video played throughout the day on cable television and on the Internet.

Matthew Dowd, a former political adviser to President George W. Bush who has become a frequent critic of Republicans, said that the tone of Ms. Palin?s message was not appropriate for the moment of national grief and that she had missed an opportunity to be seen as a leader.

?Sarah Palin seems trapped in a world that is all about confrontation and bravado,? Mr. Dowd said. ?When the country seeks comforting and consensus, she offers conflict and confrontation.?

Advisers to Ms. Palin did not respond to interview requests on Wednesday, and she did not cite any specific examples of what she considered to be unfair coverage or commentary. Ms. Palin offered her deep condolences for victims of the shooting, then went to on dismiss suggestions that political speech should be toned done. She did not mention the shooting suspect, Jared L. Loughner, by name, but said that the violence could not be blamed on talk radio or those who participated in political debate.

?There are those who claim political rhetoric is to blame for the despicable act of this deranged apparently apolitical criminal,? Ms. Palin said. ?And they claim political debate has somehow gotten more heated just recently. But when was it less heated ? back in those calm days when political figures literally settled their differences with dueling pistols??

Ms. Palin also turned to the words of former President Ronald Reagan, saying that society should not be blamed for the acts of an individual. She said she had spent the last several days ?praying for guidance,? as she sorted out the lessons of the Arizona tragedy.

?We must reject the idea that every time a law?s broken, society is guilty rather than the lawbreaker,? Ms. Palin said. ?It is time to restore the American precept that each individual is accountable for his actions.?

The video, which seemed to be aimed at appealing to her committed supporters rather than winning over her critics, contained several references to the country?s ?foundational freedoms? and the intentions of the nation?s founders. Twice, she called the United States ?exceptional,? a frequent dig at Mr. Obama, whom conservatives accuse of not believing in the concept of ?American exceptionalism.?

The White House did not comment on Ms. Palin?s statement, and the president did not mention her in his address on Wednesday evening.

?President Obama and I may not agree on everything,? she said, ?but I know he would join me in affirming the health of our democratic process.?

Obama Calls for New Era of Civility in U.S. Politics

The president directly confronted the political debate that erupted after the rampage, urging people of all beliefs not to use the tragedy to turn on one another. He did not cast blame on Republicans or Democrats, but asked people to ?sharpen our instincts for empathy.?

It was one of the more powerful addresses that Mr. Obama has delivered as president, harnessing the emotion generated by the shock and loss from Saturday?s shootings to urge Americans ?to expand our moral imaginations, to listen to each other more carefully, to sharpen our instincts for empathy and remind ourselves of all the ways that our hopes and dreams are bound together.?

?At a time when our discourse has become so sharply polarized, at a time when we are far too eager to lay the blame for all that ails the world at the feet of those who think differently than we do,? he said, ?it?s important for us to pause for a moment and make sure that we are talking with each other in a way that heals, not a way that wounds.?

At an evening memorial service at the University of Arizona, the president led an overflow crowd in eulogizing the six people who died on Saturday and asked for prayers for the wounded, including Representative Gabrielle Giffords, who the authorities say was the target of an assassination attempt.

He warned against ?simple explanations,? and spoke of the unknowability of the thoughts that ?lurked in the inner recesses of a violent man?s mind.? He suggested that the events should force individuals to look inward but also that they should prompt a collective response against reflexive ideological and social conflict.

While the tone and content were distinctly nonpolitical, there were clear political ramifications to the speech, giving Mr. Obama a chance, for an evening at least, to try to occupy a space outside of partisanship or agenda.

?If this tragedy prompts reflection and debate, as it should, let?s make sure it?s worthy of those we have lost,? Mr. Obama said. ?Let?s make sure it?s not on the usual plane of politics and point scoring and pettiness that drifts away with the next news cycle.?

As members of the House reconvened in Washington for the first time since the shooting, setting aside a partisan health care debate to honor the lives of the victims, the memorial service here took on the form of a national catharsis, including a presidential reading from the Book of Psalms. But thousands of students and others in the crowd cheered at several other points during Mr. Obama?s 32-minute address, which took on the feel of a rally dedicated to the Arizona victims.

?If, as has been discussed in recent days, their deaths help usher in more civility in our public discourse,? Mr. Obama said, ?let us remember that it is not because a simple lack of civility caused this tragedy ? it did not ? but rather because only a more civil and honest public discourse can help us face up to our challenges as a nation, in a way that would make them proud.?

The president spoke after stopping to visit Ms. Giffords in her hospital room. He said he was told that shortly after his visit, Ms. Giffords opened her eyes for the first time, a moment that was witnessed by Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, Democrat of New York; Representative Nancy Pelosi, Democrat of California; and other lawmakers who were here to pay their respects.

?Gabby opened her eyes for the first time,? Mr. Obama announced to the crowd. ?Gabby opened her eyes!?

The scene inside McKale Memorial Arena was a mix of grief and celebration, where a capacity crowd of 14,000 gathered beneath championship banners for the University of Arizona Wildcats. The service, which was televised nationally on the major broadcast and cable news networks, gave the president an opportunity ? and burden ? to lead the nation in mourning during prime time.

Aides said Mr. Obama wrote much of the speech himself late Tuesday night at the White House. Laden with religion overtones, Mr. Obama seemed as though he was striking a preacher?s tone with a politician?s reverb.

Helene Cooper reported from Tucson, and Jeff Zeleny from Washington. David M. Herszenhorn, Janie Lorber and Jennifer Steinhauer contributed reporting from Washington.

Blog - Planck Space Observatory Begins To Reveal Its Secrets

It's a big week for astronomers, who have an exciting new dataset to play with courtesy of the Planck Space Observatory, which is currently surveying the skies while orbiting the L2 Lagrangian Point some 1.5 million kilometres from Earth.

Planck's most important goal is to measure the cosmic microwave background, the echo of the Big Bang, in unprecedented detail. In fact, it's unlikely that any future spacecraft will do better. That's because the quality of the final data depends on how well astronomers can subtract nearer objects from the background rather than on the inherent resolution of Planck's instruments themselves. Whatever picture emerges is likely to be as good as it gets.

But the Planck mission has other goals too. Astronomers want to use it to build up a map of galaxy clusters on huge scales, to spot instances of gravitational lensing of the CMB and to look at the Milky Way, the planets and the Sun.

Planck has been collecting data continuously since 13 August 2009 and has almost completed three surveys of the entire sky.

This week, the Planck Collaboration of over 200 scientists from around the world release a first set of data early. They're doing this so astronomers can train other instruments on any objects of interest.

In particular, they want to give the Herschel infrared space observatory a chance to peak at any goodies Planck uncovers. Herschel was launched with Planck and is also orbiting L2 cooled by liquid helium which is gradually boiling away. Consequently, Herschel has a limited lifespan of only 3 years, which it is already more than half-way through.

The Planck Collaboration has released its data in 23 papers placed on the arXiv this week. It's clear the data is beginning to throw new light on mysteries such as the strange emissions from dust in the Magellanic Clouds and the properties of the interstellar medium in our galaxy.

But it's also clear that we're going to hear a lot more about Planck in the coming years. I've placed links to all the new papers below, in case you want to get a head start.

CityPockets: A Digital Wallet for Social Coupons

CityPockets: A Digital Wallet for Social Coupons

Social coupon services like Groupon and Living Social can potentially save you a lot of cash with discounted vouchers. Although, it?s pretty easy to lose track of them, and if you?re using a bunch of these coupon services, you might even forget to use them before the expiry dates. Here?s where the new service CityPockets comes in handy.

New York-Based startup CityPockets, gives deal-hunters a way to manage multiple coupon services in one tidy place. It?s a free service that imports your vouchers from deal sites like Groupon, Living Social and Boards Deals, and it will organize them and remind you when the coupon is close to expiring.

How it Works

After a user adds their credentials on each deal site they belong to, CityPockets will list all of the vouchers within its elegant coupon organizer, and will place them in categories. There are several ways to view deals; by the type of coupon (dining, retail) and by date.

citypockets

To ensure a deal is never missed, users can browse deals by those expiring this week or in one to six months. But, it will send you a reminder when something is about to expire. There?s also an option to see all of the deals overlaid on a map, a super handy tool to use (or print) before hitting the town. Overall, both the categories feature and the way it sorts the deals by date is a major win.

If you?re serious about deals, this is going to save you time because by using CityPockets you no longer need to log-in to multiple sites. Another benefit of the service, is it enables users to easily pull up coupons from their mobile phones or print a PDF?s of each coupon from one place. And, the option to view your entire list of coupons on a map and receive reminders is kinda nifty. We?d like to hear what you think. Would you use this service?

Cubeduel Launches Social Game on? LinkedIn?

Cubeduel Launches Social Game on? LinkedIn?

If you haven?t yet played around with Cubeduel, do it now.  It won?t make you any smarter, but it?s an oddly entertaining way to browse through your coworkers from years gone by in a hilarious, cage match format.

Cubeduel is an unexpected opportunity to evaluate head to head match-ups that you just wouldn?t see in the wild.  Who would I rather have worked with in that telecom job I had ten years ago: Ramu from accounting, or Nathalie from sales?  Predictably, I had never really thought about that question before.  Fun!

Evaluate a certain number of duels and you get to see your own score, as well as those of your co-workers.  All votes are anonymous, so participation, in theory, shouldn?t get you fired.

But what I find most fascinating about Cubeduel is that it was built on the LinkedIn API.  Yes, this is a social game built around your work network.  I can?t recall seeing something like this before, at least not built on LinkedIn.

So will Cubeduel usher in the gamification of the workplace?  Will a stealthy Farmville for the Enterprise startup announce $11.5M in new funding [God help us all] ?  After all, who has more free time and a faster internet connection than somebody in an office?

At this point, we don?t know.

But let this be a gentle reminder to all of us entrepreneurs.

Innovation can come in all shapes and sizes.  It might be the introduction of a new behavior, like Foursquare. It might be the simplification of an existing behavior, like Instagram.  It might be the gravitas of the participants themselves, like Quora.  It might lie in the distribution channel, like Yammer.  Or it might even be the network of people that your app runs on, like Cubeduel.

Food for thought.

Police Stopped Loughner?s Car on Day of Shooting

TUCSON ? Jared L. Loughner had repeated contact with law enforcement officers over the years, and hours before Saturday?s shootings was pulled over by a police officer for running a red light as he frenetically prepared to kill a congresswoman, the authorities said Wednesday.

Investigators are ?100 percent? certain that Mr. Loughner did not have an accomplice, and while they continue to investigate his ?online associations? they see no obvious connection between Mr. Loughner and political extremists, said Richard Kastigar, who oversees investigations at the Pima County Sheriff?s Department. Six people were killed and 14 wounded in the shootings.

Instead, local and federal law enforcement officials are focusing now on filling in gaps in the timeline on the day of the shooting and gathering evidence to counter an expected insanity defense, investigators said.

Judge Larry Alan Burns of Federal District Court in San Diego was named on Wednesday to preside over Mr. Loughner?s trial. Judge Burns was appointed to the federal bench in 2003 by President George W. Bush, and is best known for presiding over the trial of Representative Randy Cunningham of California, who pleaded guilty in 2005 to taking $2.4 million in bribes from military contractors.

So far, this much is known about Mr. Loughner?s movements in the hours before the shooting, according to the authorities:

7:34 a.m.: Mr. Loughner was pulled over by an Arizona Game and Fish Department officer for running a red light on an access road a few miles from the supermarket where the shooting later took place.

?The contact was very cordial,? said Jim Paxon, a spokesman for the department. ?Mr. Loughner was very forthcoming with his license and registration and insurance. The officer did a visual examination of the vehicle. He had no probable cause to search the vehicle or detain the subject.?

About 8 a.m.: Randy Loughner saw his son take a black bag out of the trunk of a vehicle outside the family home. When the father demanded to know what was inside, the son mumbled something unintelligible and took off on foot. His father followed in a car but lost him.

9:18 a.m.: Mr. Loughner contacted a taxi company from a Circle K convenience store between the family home and the shooting site.

9:41 a.m.: A taxi arrived to pick him up.

9:59 a.m.: The taxi arrived at the Safeway supermarket where Representative Gabrielle Giffords was about to conduct a meet-the-constituents event. The driver and Mr. Loughner entered the supermarket to get change for the fare.

10:11 a.m.: Mr. Loughner opened fire, beginning with Ms. Giffords and then aiming into the crowd.

Investigators say the evidence they are gathering shows that Mr. Loughner set out to kill Ms. Giffords and that he knew the difference between right and wrong. They cite comments to a friend asking for forgiveness. Mr. Kastigar also noted scrawlings on a piece of paper found in his house, including the words ?die bitch,? ?die cops? and words to the effect of ?assassination plans have been arranged,? Mr. Kastigar said.

The sheriff?s department released records Wednesday showing that Mr. Loughner and a member of his family had at least nine contacts with law enforcement between 1994 and 2010. He had been bullied at school, and poked with a needle by a classmate in 2004. He was also rushed to the hospital in 2006 after showing up at school severely intoxicated; he told the police he had consumed a lot of vodka because his father had yelled at him.

In 2007, the records show, he and a friend were arrested for possession of drug paraphernalia after the police smelled marijuana when they stopped a vehicle they were in.

In 2008, an officer seemed to notice something was amiss with Mr. Loughner, who came to the station to report that someone had improperly posted his name and photograph on a Web site. ?I noted that Jared was slow to respond to my questions,? the officer wrote. ?He often hesitated as if he was trying to think of an explanation.?

Mr. Kastigar offered a robust defense of police officers? actions with regard to Mr. Loughner, who had ?minor? run-ins with them before the shootings.

?There?s been all this speculation? that the gunman could have been stopped, he said. But ?there was nothing, and I cannot underscore this strongly enough,? he said, that would have led law enforcement ?to conclude that this guy was going to act out and shoot 20 people.?

Investigators are combing through social networking sites like Facebook and other online forums to reconstruct Mr. Loughner?s trail on the Internet in the weeks leading up to the shooting. But Mr. Kastigar said that would take time.

Another law enforcement official said the only gun found at the home was a single-shot shotgun. ?He didn?t have a major cache of weapons,? the official said.

Mr. Loughner bought the bullets for the Glock semiautomatic pistol used in the shooting on Saturday morning at a local Wal-mart, the authorities said. The bullets were full metal jacket range rounds, one official said, noting that had the gunman purchased more expensive self-defense rounds that mushroom upon impact, many more people might have died. It certainly would have done far ?more damage,? the official said.

The most severely wounded of the survivors, Ms. Giffords, who received a bullet wound to the head, continues to recover, doctors said Wednesday.

?We have decreased the amount of sedation and she is becoming more spontaneous,? said Dr. Peter Rhee, the director of medical trauma care at the University Medical Center in Tucson, where Ms. Giffords is being treated. Three hospital workers were fired Wednesday for looking at private medical records of victims of the shootings, though officials said they did not believe the information had been publicly released.

At Ms. Giffords?s Congressional office in Tucson, staff members said they were overwhelmed by outpouring of support for the wounded lawmaker. Among those visiting in recent days were former Senator Dennis DeConcini and Representative Raúl M. Grijalva, Democrat of Arizona, whose district abuts Ms. Giffords? and who has offered to assist his colleague with constituent services while she recovers.

Then there was the unknown man who came in and offered to be put to work. ?He came in and said he wanted to volunteer,? said C. J. Karamargin, the congresswoman?s communications director. ?We said, ?Who are you?? Then he told us he was a congressman.?

It was Representative Hanen Clarke, a newly elected Democrat from Michigan.

?It was a touching gesture,? Mr. Karamargin said.

Jennifer Medina and Anissa Tanweer contributed reporting from Tucson, and John Schwartz from New York.

The Daily gets pushed back. Launch is now ?weeks? away.

The Daily gets pushed back. Launch is now ?weeks? away.

Not long after we just showed you a first look at what the joint Apple/Murdoch project might look like, we?re seeing news from Media Memo saying that we?ll have to wait a bit longer to finally use it for ourselves. Citing sources close to the parties, it appears that Apple needs to do a bit more work on the subscription model.

The delay is supposed to give Apple time to tweak its new subscription service for publications sold through its iTunes platform.

Of course that ?weeks? figure (assuming that we?re talking more than about 2) means that The Daily is now going to be pushed beyond it?s initial January starting point. But this time will likely give Apple the leeway needed to perfect a ?push? subscription feature wherein you can purchase a subscription once and get a new edition daily without having to subscribe again.

That same model could have very well been a tipping point for the Wired Magazine iPad application. While it does look amazing, there are a number of people who feel slighted by having to repurchase the same thing each month in order to get the newest content.

Will Apple implement the push subscriptions for others, as well? We?ll have to wait and see, but it seems only to make sense.
