More details on the Novell patents that Microsoft and friends want to buy

The great Microsoft led patent purchase is back on, and it?s nearly as if nothing has changed.

There was a very confused news story that made the rounds a week ago that claimed that the Microsoft headed consortium called CPTN Holding was not going to buy hundreds of millions of dollars in Novell patents, surprising industry insiders.

We dug around and called shenanigans nearly right away, and have now been vindicated. Microsoft and the rest of its CPTN Holdings crew are back at the buying table. A new filing with the SEC from January 14th shows that CPTN Holdings will be buying more than 800 patents that relate to management, security, and identity and collaboration.

The total number of patents to be purchased has changed slightly. The original tally of 882 patents has declined to 861 following the discovery that some of what were thought to be patents were actually expired patent applications. CPTN Holdings will, provided that the sale does finally occur, buy 861 patents and 20 lapsed applications.

The difference between the first number of 882 entities and the final 881 entities is one patent being previously double counted. According to reporting on ZDNet, the EU government officials in charge of antitrust are not worried about the sale.

What comes next? It could be that CPTN Holdings actually manages to pull the trigger on the purchase, creating a very odd situation wherein a group of the most bitter technology rivals have a bag of goodies to share and distribute as they see fit. Who else wants to bet it won?t end well?

Acer: tablets will replace netbooks

Taiwanese computer maker Acer is phasing out its netbook computers with the forthcoming release of its tablets, which are due in the first half of 2011. The move is particularly significant for Acer, given that the company saw very rapid growth and profitability mostly thanks to its various netbook offerings.

Acer's upcoming tablets will begin a gradual replacement of its netbooks, in line with market demands, Taiwan sales manager Lu Bing-hsian told Computerworld. "They are aimed at phasing out netbooks," Bing-hsian said. "That's the direction of the market." Acer will keep making netbooks, adding to its millions sold to date, but the company will stick to simple models and manufacture fewer than in previous years as tablets gain popularity, he said. The company sales manager also confirmed that the tablets will use Intel's new Sandy Bridge four-core processors, will run Android, and will have 7-inch or 10-inch screens.

We've known for a while now that the company was pushing tablets, but it was never clear that netbooks would be left by the wayside. New Acer tablets shipped two months ago, starting at just $300. That same month, the company outlined plans for even more tablets, in Android and Windows flavors.

Steering Pills Safely

Controlling a pill as it moves through a patient's body could let doctors deliver drugs to precisely the right location?for instance, a tumor in the colon.

Researchers at Brown University have now demonstrated a way to safely control a maneuverable pill and watch as it passes through the gastrointestinal tract.

Aside from looking for traces in a patient's bloodstream, it is hard for doctors to tell if a drug has been delivered properly. "You can take X-rays [of tagged pills], but you can never really know what time the drug was released," says Edith Mathiowitz, an associate professor of medical science and engineering at Brown University and principal investigator on the project. Mathiowitz's team, which focuses on creating better drug-delivery technologies, originally built a magnetic tracking system to observe pills as they pass through the body. But the researchers soon realized they could control the pills as well.

"What we developed could be extremely useful for improving bioavailability for drugs that have even narrow therapeutic windows," says Mathiowitz, referring to drugs that are absorbed only in specific regions of the gastrointestinal tract. "You can use it in two ways: a retention system for the stomach [to ensure the patient receives the desired dosage] and for localization in specific regions of the gastrointestinal tract?regions that are very hard to reach."

In experiments, Mathiowitz's team moved pills through the stomachs and intestines of rats. They developed a system to measure and control the force between a one-millimeter-long magnet within the pill and a large external magnet used to control its movement. The system automatically moves the external magnet closer to or farther from the pill's magnet to maintain the minimum amount of force that will manipulate the pill, avoiding harm to the animal's intestine or stomach.

Other researcher groups have shown that capsules can be manipulated inside the body magnetically, but they have not focused on minimizing the force used, explains Bryan Laulicht, first author of the research paper describing the work, published today in the online edition of the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. "The prevailing thought was to use as much force as possible," he says. "Our real push was to emphasize the safety."

W3C releases an official HTML5 logo

The World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) has unveiled a new logo for HTML5. The logo links back to W3C, the place for authoritative information on HTML5, including specs and test cases.

The logo is meant to be taken and used by all members of the web developer and designer community. You can customize your own badge according to the technology you use, with eight classes to choose from: Device Access, Performance & Integration, Semantics, CSS3/Styling, Offline & Storage, Connectivity/Realtime, Multimedia, as well as Graphics, 3D & Effects. There are even official stickers (you'll need to send a self-addressed, stamped envelope) and $22.50 T-shirts with the new HTML5 logo.

W3C gives the following description as to why a logo is necessary: "It stands strong and true, resilient and universal as the markup you write. It shines as bright and as bold as the forward-thinking, dedicated web developers you are. It's the standard's standard, a pennant for progress. And it certainly doesn't use tables for layout. We present an HTML5 logo."

The logo was designed by boutique agency Ocupop, a firm that focuses on branding, identity, and web design. "The term HTML5 has taken on a life of its own; there has been significant confusion and debate both within the developer community and in the public at large as to what exactly HTML5 is when the term is used outside of simply referring to the spec itself The standard needs a standard," Michael Nieling, Ocupop's logo designer, said in a statement. "That is, HTML5 needs a consistent, standardized visual vocabulary to serve as a framework for conversations, presentations, and explanations."

OneNote lands on the iPhone as the Office team bows before iOS

OneNote lands on the iPhone as the Office team bows before iOS

OneNote is now available on the iPhone. This is the first major piece of Office to make the leap to the world of iOS.

As Ina Fried notes: ?While Microsoft still hopes to one day rival the iPhone, the company?s Office unit is the latest part of Redmond to acknowledge that, for now at least, the iPhone reigns supreme.?

According to a statement from Microsoft, OneNote is installed on some 78 million PCs in the US. OneNote is a combination organizer and information manager that is very popular among Office users. Perhaps its most unique feature is the ability to handle ?free form? data, allowing for users to handle their images, ideas, and whatever else they want with ease.

The iPhone version of OneNote will ?sync OneNote notebooks via Windows Live SkyDrive? and will allow users to ?access [their] notes online via Office Web Apps,? according to Microsoft.

Is this a sign that Microsoft is already hedging its bets on Windows Phone 7? Not at all, so far as we can guess. This is an evolutionary move by Microsoft to extend the reach of Office, and has very little, if anything, to do with the company?s larger mobile plans. This is what OneNote looks like on iOS:

Microsoft  is releasing the iOS OneNote application for free for a ?limited time.? If you are curious now is the moment to give it a try.

Microsoft CEO: Xbox isn't a gaming console

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer was recently interviewed by USA Today. As usual, Ballmer had some interesting things to say; here are what we consider the top three questions and answers:

Q: You sold 8 million Kinects over the holidays, more than you expected. What differentiates it from other gaming consoles on the market?

A: Xbox isn't a gaming console. Xbox is a family entertainment center. It's a place to socialize. It's a place to watch TV. We have Hulu coming. It's the only system where you are the controller. Your voice, your gestures, your body.

Ballmer has always insisted that the Xbox is an entertainment system, but the problem is that executives from Nintendo and Sony insist them same. Microsoft is a unique position because most people have a Windows PC in the house as well, but the company has not leveraged this as much as it could.

Q: But does the Microsoft brand resonate with that younger person who's looking at companies like Apple and Google thinking there is a so-called "cool factor"?

A: Maria, you go to your average 15-year-old boy, and he will say "I'll take an Xbox." I want that average 15-year-old girl as excited about the Kinect, and we haven't done as good a job drawing in that broader set of demographics.

The Kinect is definitely more consumer-focused than other Microsoft products. Ballmer has already said that PC support is coming. Here he's just reaffirming that the Kinect is Microsoft's answer to the Wii, and the casual gaming market in general.

Q: What has stopped you from making really bold bets on technology? You've got more than $40 billion on the balance sheet. If you want to have substantial market share in smartphones, why not just acquire Research In Motion, maker of the BlackBerry?

A: We've made bold technology bets. We've bet on the Cloud and our Enterprise business; it's going fantastic. We made the bet on Xbox; we made the bet on Kinect. We bet on Bing and are growing like a weed in that business. So I feel pretty good about the bets. When do acquisitions make sense? That's a complicated subject.

This directly addresses one of those rumors that keeps coming and going in the mobile industry. As analysts continue to flog RIM and Microsoft, some believe the bigger should buy the smaller, join forces, and essentially turn two smaller competitors into one bigger and better one. Ballmer isn't denying an acquisition outright, but he is denying that Microsoft purchasing RIM makes sense.
