Enermax to launch CPU coolers

Enermax to launch CPU coolers

Posted on 19th Feb 2011 at 10:32 by Richard Swinburne with 18 comments

During a brief discussion with Enermax recently, a PR person let slip that the company's planning to launch a new CPU cooler range, which will be based on the principles of vortex generator flow technology, while featuring a couple of Enermax's Twister bearing fans.

The cooler has six heatpipes that get direct contact with the CPU, while a Twister fan sits on either side of the tower. Meanwhile, the LEDs can be switched off using the little buttons below each fan in the picture. The fans *should* feature 4-pin PWM power connectors as well, but we don't know whether they'll be tied together with a single connector yet.

More information about the coolers is likely to start doing the rounds soon, though, as Enermax is encouraging folk to visit its booth in the usually wet (sometimes snowy), cold and miserable surroundings of the CeBIT tradeshow in Hannover, Germany, at the start of March.

Seagate launches 3TB Barracuda XT with legacy support

Following Western Digital and Hitachi, Seagate is the third manufacturer to launch a 3TB internal 3.5-inch hard drive. The Barracuda XT has five platters with an areal density of 488Gb/in, marking an improvement over the Deskstar's 411Gb/in. Seagate's drive spins at 7200RPM and sports 64MB of cache as well as the SATA 6Gb/s interface -- though transfers peak at 149MB/s.

As you're probably aware, there are several technical limitations that prevent most systems from being able to use a 3TB drive, but Seagate's DiscWizard software offers workaround. To use a 3TB HDD for storage you need an OS that supports GPT partitions (read: not Windows XP), while a 64-bit OS and UEFI motherboard are required to create boot partitions larger than 2.19TB.

DiscWizard installs a driver to achieve compatibility with non-UEFI systems (probably what you currently have). Additionally, the software creates a bootable 2.1TB partition alongside a second 900GB partition, but you still can't have a single 3TB volume. DiscWizard doesn't seem to do anything particularly magical, but it should make it easier for users to get the drive up and running.

"We believe UEFI will remain in a nascent category for a bit longer before there is broad adoption," said David Burks, marketing director for Seagate. "We felt strongly that we needed to create a product that didn't require UEFI for customers who wanted to use the full capacity of these big drives." The Seagate Barracuda XT is shipping now with an MSRP of $279 and a five-year warranty.

Congress Backs Energy Agency

Two years after it was created the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Energy (ARPA-E) is receiving support within Congress as a way to address concerns about energy security, the economy, and national security. While Congress contemplates major cuts in many programs, Republicans and Democrats in the House have voted to increase funding for the agency above current levels.

ARPA-E is meant to fund risky energy-research projects?ones that are unlikely to get initial funding any other way but have the potential to have a big impact. For example, they might seek to make solar power as cheap as fossil-fuel-based power or to give electric vehicles a range and a cost comparable to those of gasoline-powered cars.

Despite substantial bipartisan support for the agency when it was created, ARPA-E received no funding until April 2009, when it was awarded $400 million as part of the Recovery Act. It has yet to receive any substantial funding under the regular budget. But now a House continuing resolution bill for keeping the government running this year, which features large cuts in discretionary spending, includes a $50 million boost for the agency. The increase is about a 10th of what President Obama asked for in his 2012 budget, but it is a marked exception to the spending reductions in the bill.

ARPA-E has moved quickly over the last two years, funding 121 projects, many in response to workshops with experts aimed at identifying critical areas of research. The agency's choices have met with mixed reviews. A group of "electrofuels" projects is investigating more efficient ways to make renewable liquid fuels. But some critics have noted that these approaches won't work unless there are first big advances in other areas, such as solar power and hydrogen production from renewable sources. Arun Majumdar, head of ARPA-E, acknowledges that the electrofuels projects are still "early-stage."

ARPA-E has also funded research into batteries that use lithium metal, a material that can store almost as much energy as gasoline but has proved finicky in rechargeable batteries?so much so that some battery experts predict that it will never be practical to use.

The agency has widespread support in Congress?although not necessarily to fund the agency at the levels Obama wants, according to Senator Lisa Murkowski (R- Alaska), who spoke at an ARPA-E conference this week. She noted that an amendment that would have eliminated the $50 million increase in ARPA-E funding in the House bill was voted down by a substantial margin. She also said it's "widely acknowledged that we're going to need some genuine breakthroughs [in energy], where that kind of breakthrough is exceedingly difficult." She added, "There's a general willingness in Congress to give this effort a true go, and this is at a time when much of our focus in Congress is on finding ways to reduce funding."

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone denies $450 million JPMorgan investment

Twitter co-founder Biz Stone has denied rumours that the company is in talks with JP Morgan Chase & Co, dismissing reports that suggested the social networking company would sell the investment firm a 10% share of the company for a reported $450 million.

Stone told Reuters that the reports were ?made up?, but did admit to discussions with Facebook ?a couple of years ago ? (but) nothing formal since and it?s mostly rumors all the time?.

JPMorgan recently raised $1.22 billion for a new fund to invest in the social media sector, creating a ?Digital Growth Fund? that would offer ?pooled investment fund interests?. The announcement of the fund follows January?s $1.5 billion fundraising by Facebook, mainly from Goldman Sachs Group Inc and its international investors.

Stone reiterated that Twitter was committed to remain independent and that the company was not in formal bid talks.

The company is looking to expand its operations outside of North America, possibly opening a new European headquarters in London. Twitter is hiring in the UK but the company?s starting small, acquiring Account Executives and Account Managers at present.

Twitter how has 350 employees and is valued at $4.5 billion, a valuation that the Financial Times reported on Sunday.

Tablets of 2011: What to Look For

Last year promised to be the year of the tablet, and at least for Apple, it was. The nearly ubiquitous iPad managed not only to outsell every other tablet on the market by a wide margin, it also exceeded Mac sales in Q4 with a record 7.33 million units moved. But even if Apple is not likely to lose its throne anytime soon, competition is finally making itself present. If Android's smartphone gains serve any indication this should be an interesting year for tablets as well.

Rivals such as Motorola and LG are coming on strong with the first Android "Honeycomb" tablets, while Research In Motion is launching the PlayBook using a completely reworked operating system based on QNX Neutrino. HP will start to see the fruits of its Palm acquisition when it launches the TouchPad, the first webOS-based tablet, this summer.

We've compiled a comparative table with what we consider are the hottest tablets either currently available or announced so far. Note that we've only included those models that are expected to be released in the next few months and the reason for that is two-fold: their specs are official or at least somewhat reliable, and because we've seen a lot of teaser products that in the end don't even make it to market -- which happened a lot last year.

We'll update this guide as new tablets that catch our attention are announced and approaching their release, but if you are in the market for a tablet now this should definitely serve as a starting point for narrowing down your purchase. Click on the arrow to the right of the table to expand and view the full comparison chart.

Apple's iPad remains one of the best options out there, largely due to its relatively mature ecosystem and overall polished operating system. With the iPad 2 hitting store shelves in March, the first-generation model now starts at a tempting $400, while the latest and greatest takes the $500 price point sporting a slimmer design, a faster dual-core A5 processor with up to 9 times faster graphics processing, and rear and front facing cameras.

Then there is the army of Android tablets of which the Motorola Xoom, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2, LG G-Slate and Notion Ink Adam particularly stand out. The Xoom will mark the arrival of Honeycomb, Google's tablet-specific variant of Android, will come packed with very powerful hardware and an array of optional accessories to expand its capabilities.

LG's beautifully designed G-Slate carries mostly similar specs, albeit with a smaller display, but it also offers stereoscopic 3D content viewing and recording. Meanwhile, the long-awaited Notion Ink Adam takes a different approach by incorporating the innovative PixelQi display, which provides E-ink-like readability outdoors and improved battery life. The Adam won't be shipping with Honeycomb, but it uses a heavily optimized software interface called Eden UI.

In our opinion Windows tablets simply cannot provide the same level of experience as their iOS and Android counterparts, but we decided to include one model in our list to represent the platform. The Asus Eee Slate EP121 offers perhaps the most powerful hardware of the bunch and some interesting features to boot -- including a Wacom digitizer for pen input and a bundled Bluetooth keyboard. It's going to be a heavy alternative and will likely suffer from poor battery life.

Lastly, it will be interesting to see the BlackBerry PlayBook and HP's TouchPad compete in the tablet market. From what we've seen so far both will bring fresh and beautiful UIs to the game, and webOS in particular is considered to have a very robust multitask implementation, but neither company has had much luck with third-party developers.

There will be quite a few more tablet releases down the road. Those who decide to wait and see how the market plays out can expect devices from HTC, Lenovo, MSI, Samsung, Toshiba, Vizio and many other lesser-known manufacturers. The HTC Flyer, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 and Toshiba's unnamed tablet will probably garner significant attention, not to mention the potential arrival of a number of CES prototypes like the Acer Iconia, Asus Eee Slider, and Lenovo LePad.
