Rumor: Chrome OS devices to be sold as a subscription

Google is reportedly planning on selling Chrome OS devices to customers using a subscription-based model. The search giant will first target Gmail users, though it's not clear if this refers to mainstream Gmail.com users or Google Apps premier customers.

Google plans to make the notebooks available for $10 to $20 a month per user, and will provide hardware refreshes as they are released as part of the package. The company will also replace faulty hardware for the life of the subscription, according to Neowin.

Google will also make the devices available for a one time payment, and will likely partner with retailers and carriers to do so. A price point has not been finalized, though devices in the US could cost between $250 and $600.

Since last year, Chrome notebooks from Acer and Samsung have been expected to arrive in the first half of 2011, and the most recent rumors say that Google will ship them in time for Q2 2011, possibly in June or July.

Chrome OS will only ship on specific hardware following deals struck between Google and the manufacturers. Chromium OS (the open source development version of Chrome OS) will be available as a disk image so that enthusiasts can put Chrome OS on any machine they please, though this won't get the same support from Google.

Chrome OS differentiates itself from Android by targeting devices with physical keyboards. Google's thinking is that many people already spend all their time in a browser, and that building an OS that is essentially a browser will make computers faster, simpler, and more secure.

iPad Review: Sword and Sworcery EP

iPad Review: Sword and Sworcery EP

Posted on 11th Apr 2011 at 10:50 by David Hing with 12 comments

Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP for the iPad is like nothing else you have ever played. Described as ?a 21st century interpretation of the archetypical old school videogame adventure? it uses beautifully crafted pixel-scapes to do for video gaming what the impressionist painters did for art.

A collaborative project from indie studio Capybara, rock musicians and art from the Superbrothers themselves, Sword and Sworcery EP is a essentially a point and click adventure game that sees you cast as a warrior out to destroy an ancient evil. To do that you?ll need to solve puzzles, fight bears and collect an artefact called the Megatome ? so far, so adventure-game. What sets is apart from the likes of Kings Quest however are the lashings of surrealism, abstraction and poetry that somehow never slips into infuriating pretentiousness.

The real star isn?t the music or the mysticism, however, but the visual style. It?s absolutely perfect, causing us to frequently stop playing for a moment or two just to admire the scenery ? no mean feat considering the outstanding visual quality of most modern games. The landscapes are rich and detailed and invoke a near painterly quality. There?s a rare sense of artistry to Sword and Sworcery that we?ve not seen in a long, long time.

Sword and Sworcery?s music is still exemplary, however. The sound design has been meticulously crafted, fitting perfectly with the gameplay and creating an absorbing atmosphere that genuinely hooks you in to the moment. The sounds and music towards the end of our first session built a huge amount of tension and it was only after the threat ? which we won?t name to avoid spoiling it ? passed that we realised that our eyes were stinging due to lack of blinking.

A major drawback of most iPad and iPhone games is that they fail to make the most of the touchscreen interface or try to shoe horn in an ineffective d-pad. Point and click games seem like an assured win for touch-screens however, so Sword and Sworcery is a natural fit. It doesn?t limit itself to the conventions of the genre though, using screen-tilting mechanics regular switches from landscape to portrait to keep things interesting. In landscape mode you?re able to move around with your sword and shield equipped, while turning to portrait position opens your Megatome ? a combination spell book and help guide.

Sword and Sworcery isn?t all hard-core art-game, however ? there are points of genuine humour and awesome subtlety. At one point, for example, you have to travel into your dreams to find a lost key, which involves following a bear which dances like Ricky Gervais in the Office. It?s a moment which, like the game as a whole, feels beautifully surreal and yet oddly poignant.

Verdict: Sword and Sworcery could be a landmark in history of mobile gaming, proving to be the first title we?ve seen on the iPad platform which so wonderfully blurs the line between gaming and ambient art. Pensive, intelligent and wonderfully rich, you can feel the deep love and adoration for gaming that has gone into this project and it shines from its every pixel.

Superbrothers: Sword and Sorcery EP is developed by a whole host of talented artist and is available for the iPad via the AppStore.

US Police Can Copy Your iPhone?s Contents In Under Two Minutes

It has emerged that Michigan State Police have been using a high-tech mobile forensics device that can extract information from over 3,000 models of mobile phone, potentially grabbing all media content from your iPhone in under two minutes.

The CelleBrite UFED is a scanner that Michigan officers have been using since August 2008 to copy information from mobile phones belonging to motorists stopped for minor traffic violations. The device can circumvent password restrictions and extract existing, hidden, and deleted phone data, including call history, text messages, contacts, images, and geotags.

In short, it can copy everything on your smartphone in a matter of minutes.

Learning that the police had been using phone scanning devices, the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) has issued freedom of information requests which demand that state officials open up the data collected, to better assess if penalised motorists warrant having their data copied.

Michigan State Police were more than happy to provide the information ? as long as the ACLU paid $544,680. Obviously not pocket change.

?Law enforcement officers are known, on occasion, to encourage citizens to cooperate if they have nothing to hide,? ACLU staff attorney Mark P. Fancher wrote. ?No less should be expected of law enforcement, and the Michigan State Police should be willing to assuage concerns that these powerful extraction devices are being used illegally by honoring our requests for cooperation and disclosure.?

Once the data is obtained, the device?s ?Physical Analyzer? can map both existing and deleted locations on Google Earth, porting location data and image geotags on Google Maps.

The ACLU?s main worry is that the scanner is quietly being used to bypass Fourth Amendment protections against unreasonable searches:

?With certain exceptions that do not apply here, a search cannot occur without a warrant in which a judicial officer determines that there is probable cause to believe that the search will yield evidence of criminal activity.

A device that allows immediate, surreptitious intrusion into private data creates enormous risks that troopers will ignore these requirements to the detriment of the constitutional rights of persons whose cell phones are searched.?

The next time you are Michigan, be sure drive carefully!

4 easy tools to keep up your 24-hour Twitter feed

By definition, social media is meant to be just that, social. The argument to automate your Twitter feed or not can be hashed and rehashed over and over, but some facts remain the same; there are people behind the mechanisms. And as human beings, whether we like it or not, we?re not meant to work 24/7, and occasionally need to sleep.

In today?s Twitterverse, there are a number of tools such as HootSuite, CoTweet, and TweetDeck that can offer users an almost overwhelming array of options. But what if you want to provide valuee to your followers throughout the entire 24- hour day, and don?t need all the bells and whistles of a full-blown social media package?

Let?s take a look at 4 minimal Twitter automation tools that can help you stay engaged, even while catching a few winks.

Free

Who doesn?t love free? These two tools are available free of charge, but also provide the bare minimum of features. If bare-bones is your style, these two are for you.

FutureTweets

Admittedly, the UI is already starting to show signs of aging, but the service remains very well in tact. In fact, one of FutureTweet?s selling points is that it is so simple.

Sign in with your Twitter credentials, thereby authorizing the service. Likewise, the settings department is a one-click affair, a ?Please set your time zone? option.

When it comes to scheduling, FutureTweets shines, as its minimalism makes it one of the easier tools in the bunch to use. Simply enter your tweet, select the publish time, date and schedule it.  And even though FutureTweets runs lean and clean, there are a few niceties including a handy ASCII character, click to insert feature, as well as some text inverting Tom foolery, should you be so inclined. Likewise, FutureTweets also provides a rundown of your scheduled and published tweets, thus providing confirmation of publication for overly worried communications managers.

After speaking with FutureTweets developer Joost Ruyter, he made it clear that FutureTweets is receiving less of his attention these days, as he?s also developed LaterBro.com, a similar service, but with Facebook update functionality as well. It?s this service that?s been used by @FedExDelivers to keep the conversation flowing, even while representatives aren?t ?on the clock?. He informs me that there?s also another project in the works, so stay tuned.

Twuffer

Similar to FutureTweets, Twuffer offers up a simple, yet effective, set-it-and-forget-it tweet scheduler. Twuffer?s power lies in the fact the most of its features don?t clutter the interface until needed.

Signup and login is a painless procedure, simply authorize the tool via your Twitter credentials, and you?re good to go. Twuffer?s settings take FutureTweet?s one step further and in addition to selecting your time zone; you?re also given the option to include your tweets in the Twuffer homepage stream, which really amounts to nothing more than an ongoing use case stream for Twuffer creator Grady Britton.

A clean and simple dashboard gives you a quick overview of number of tweets entered, scheduled, and sent. If you want to drill down further into the schedule, navigation tabs allow users to pinpoint scheduled tweets, sent tweets, and failed tweets.

One nicety about Twuffer is that the tweet input panel is readily available no matter which tab you?re viewing. And remember those not-there-until-needed options? When clicking in the text input area, a small indicator will popup giving you a character count. Likewise, when clicking the date and time input fields, a calendar and clock present users with handy options. Last by not least, Twuffer provides you with a handy reminder of your last tweet sent by posting it in the top right corner just above the new tweet text input field.

Freemium

While both of these services are available for free, they both offer reasonably affordable upgrade options that, when combined with proper analysis, can take your Twitter to a whole new level.

Timely

Timely is brought to us by social marketing ROI experts Flowtown. As mentioned above, Timely operates on the freemium model, thus allowing users to get a taste of the functionality. From a minimalistic approach, the free version will suit users just fine, but it?s when you step up and upgrade to the Timely Pro version where a number of ?Power User? features come to the forefront.

Timely is unique in the fact that users are not allowed to schedule the time of release of their scheduled tweets. Rather, the tool analyzes you last 199 tweets, and automagically determines the optimal release time. Feeding back into itself, Timely regularly gathers data and adjusts its timings based on additional tweets. Flowtown CEO and Co-Founder Ethan Bloch explains the mechanism at Quora:

  1. It pulls in your past 199 tweets and analyzes them for Retweets (native RTs only).
  2. It then plots 24 buckets, 1 for each hour in the day.
  3. It then assigns Tweets with RTs to it?s corresponding time bucket and ignores Tweets without RTs.
  4. It then applies the following calculation per time bucket: # of RTs in this bucket / # of RTs within the sample of 199 tweets.
  5. It then determines your optimal time buckets starting with best to worst performing and excludes.

Finally we perform some additional filters and qualifying to aid the user experience and expectations when using Timely, so it?s not just raw buckets.

On the options front, Timely keeps it simple, however offers a few that others don?t, including the option to toggle weekend tweeting on/off, as well as regulate the number of tweets per day. Timely also features a bit.ly option, which is certainly a nice tracking and analytics tool, as well as collaborative tweeting. The collaboration feature is particularly noteworthy, as here we have the first instance of a minimal Twitter tool offering powerful abilities for SMBs and corporations alike.

When it comes to the paid version, Timely offers two pricing options, $19.99/month, or $199 for the entire year. This paid service offers the option to export analytics (native and classic retweets, clicks, and reach). An unlimited number of RSS/Atom feeds can been set up within the paid version of Timely, and users can toggle the option to receive real-time notifications. Similar to LaterBro above, the paid Timely also offers options to schedule updates to Facebook.

Buffer

Rounding out this toolset roundup, let?s have a look at Buffer. Originally highlighted by TNW writer Francis Tan in February, Buffer also operates under the freemium business model, and offers up a surprising number of features in its free version.

Of all four tools profiled, Buffer was the only one that asked for an email address upon signup. It?s not quite clear what they?re doing with this information, as a sign up/login could be accomplished via an Oauth, but I?ve yet to receive any spam.

Buffer has one of the cleanest interfaces of all three profiled, and clearly team members Joel and Leo have experience in selling to consumers. All of Buffer?s Premium features are right out in the open, enticing users to dive right in. Once a field is entered in one of the premium features, a notice informs you that this is a Premium feature, and suggests you upgrade. Smart selling.

Of the features that are free, who would need more? A clean interface allows users to stack their preferred tweets in an easy to understand timeline, and will send you a one-time email reminder when your buffer is empty. Scheduled times are configurable under Settings, where you?ll also find the aforementioned upsell features which include bit.ly integration and collaborative, team tweeting.

When it comes to interactivity with the app, Buffer stands head and shoulders above the competition by offering a Chrome Extension, Safari Extension, and Universal Bookmarlet. Through these extensions, users can easily ?fill the pipeline? with interesting articles or objects of interest without ever having to visit Buffer directly.

While not offered by Twuffer or FutureTweets, both Timely and Buffer offer a ?suggested tweets? option. Timely?s is packed with only 5 canned quotes, while Buffer has recently sought to crowdsource suggested tweets moving forward. Likewise, they?ve addressed Francis? note, and have added a tweet now button.

Of note: both Timely and Buffer offer analytics in their free packages. While Timely provides only basic information, retweets and reach (follower counts), Buffer offers an additional option, informing users of how many clicks the scheduled tweet received. This one feature can make all the difference when planning future Twitter campaigns, as well as a much better judge of not only who?s retweeting what you?re putting out, but also taking the critical step of actually clicking though to the link you?re likely to be sharing.

So whether you?re an SMB owner looking to engage your audience around the clock, or a multinational corporation looking for a minimal toolkit to keep readers from around the world informed, the 4 Twitter tools above can easily help you accomplish this goal. Sure there are a number of others out there that will also do the same, but again, they?re sometimes just a bit more than one needs.

Acer splits in two, cuts sales forecast

Acer has lowered its second quarter sales forecast by 10% instead of expecting figures to remain consistent with the January to March period, when it shipped 10.9 million computers. The first quarter of 2011 was rough too, marking a 12% drop from the same period in 2010. The company blamed various factors for today's update, including recent internal restructuring, inventory adjustments, and the seasonally slow second quarter. The system builder's stock price has dropped 46% since the fourth quarter of last year and plans to address investors' concerns on April 28.

Interestingly, there was no mention of the so called "tablet effect." Analyst firms including IDC and Gartner are convinced that tablets have been cutting into industry-wide PC sales, which declined 3.2% on-year in the first quarter of 2011. Acer in specific witnessed a 15.8% drop in global sales, while US shipments fell 42.1%. That's a far greater decline than IDC and Gartner recorded for any other vendor, and it's probably no coincidence that Acer focuses on affordable laptops in the same price bracket as tablets. By comparison, Dell had the second worst growth, falling "only" 11.8% on-year.

In addition to updating its sales estimates, Acer has announced that it will split its operations into two distinct entities as part of its renewed focus on mobile devices. Called the Touch and Business Group, Acer's mobile arm will be headed by newly-appointed corporate president Jim Wong. Meanwhile, Campbell Kan, former vice president of Acer's smart handled business unit, will lead the remaining PC-oriented part of today's separation called the PC Global Operations. Wong and Kan will report to interim CEO J.T. Wang, who is serving as a temporary replacement for Gianfranco Lanci.

Lanci resigned on March 31 after disagreeing with Acer's board about the company's future development -- namely, the tablet and smartphone segments. Upon Lanci's departure, Wang said the company would be stepping into and cautiously investing in the new mobile device market. Wong echoed these thoughts in a statement today saying "touch/mobile devices open up a host of new opportunities," and that they "form Acer's new business and growth engine for the future." Some analysts don't share that enthusiasm about Acer's future, suggesting it may be prime for acquisition.

When Lanci departed, TBR was quick to suggest that it would spell Acer's demise. "TBR believes Lanci's resignation positions Acer as a key acquisition target," analyst Cassandra Mooshian wrote last month. "We believe there is significant opportunity for Lenovo if it were to acquire Acer, as the companies are complementary to each other. Lenovo is a key player in the Chinese market for enterprise PCs and would gain a consumer play on a global basis, as Acer's consumer strategy is particularly strong in China and EMEA." Care to make a prediction? Will Acer sink or swim?

UK?s controversial Digital Economy Act a step closer as court rejects ISP complaints

The Digital Economy Act, a controversial piece of UK legislation passed last year that, among other things, takes a hard line on unauthorised filesharing, was nudged a little closer to taking effect today after complaints from leading ISPs were thrown out by a High Court judge.

ISPs BT and Talk Talk, unhappy that the burden of policing a ?blacklist? of suspected filesharers was being placed on their shoulders, had been granted a judicial review of the Bill after suggesting that it was unlawful under EU law.

However, Justice Kenneth Parker ruled against four of the points raised in their arguments that the Act contravened European law. The judge did back the ISPs on one ground, requiring an adjustment to the draft Statutory Instrument on costs.

UK music industry body the BPI is unsurprisingly happy with the ruling and urges BT and TalkTalk to now work with the government and rightsholders to implement the DEA.

The news means that the law is now cleared for being enacted. For more on what that means, read our primer on the subject.

Meet Heather Poe

This is Heather Poe. She?s a young woman, living in Los Angeles and attending college there, though it isn?t her hometown. She?s kind, happy, eager to please and a little bit geeky. She?s also one of the best features of one of my favourite games, Troika?s Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

You find Heather in the hospital, where she?s been rushed into the emergency room for some strange neck wound. As a newly turned vampire yourself, you know that there?s more to this story than meets the eye, but your heightened senses also tell you that she?ll survive her undead encounter if she just gets some fresh haemoglobin. Unfortunately, there isn?t a doctor to hand and the hospital is criminally understaffed.

Earlier, a friend of yours told you that vampire blood has certain special characteristics when drunk by humans ? mainly as a healing elixir. You pause, then slit your wrist to save her young life before disappearing back into the night. You have errands to run, after all. Little do you know that this isn?t the last time you?ll be seeing Heather.

She shows up a few nights later, grabbing you on the street and desperate to thank you. She?s babbling and doe-eyed and she knows far too much about you and your kind ? you?ll suffer reprisals if you don?t take this matter in hand, but now is not the time. You send her back to your haven ? that grotty motel in Santa Monica ? and tell her to wait for you.

You have a choice now. Your blood is mixing with Heather?s and creating a potent, mind-altering brew. The more time she spends with you, the more she falls under your thrall, whether you want her to or not. You know you should send her away, break the bond and tell her to forget all this silliness about vampires. You know you should, but a lot of reasons run through you mind for why you shouldn?t ? a lot of excuses.

You?re little more than a servant for others at the moment, so the idea of cultivating your own slave does have a certain appeal. Letting her go may bring the wrath of your superiors if she exposes you. You wonder about the direction you could steer Heather, making her serve you in a way that seems repugnant in the daylight hours.

That?s what's great about being a vampire; not casting a reflection. You can avoid a lot of guilt and shame when you don?t have to meet your own gaze.

Over the next few days or weeks, Heather changes. Sometimes you're the one pushing, telling her how to dress or to surrender her life savings. At other times, it?s the blood that changes her. She was eager to please at the beginning, but now her devotion is fanatical. One day you find she?s bought you home some food - still alive and locked in the bathroom. The longer the ?relationship? lasts, the more you get the idea that it isn?t going to end well, but the harder it becomes to end it.

Heather?s fate ultimately lies in your hands. She?s a nice, likeable person and you want to do well by her. At the same time, though, the rest of LA is working to reshape you. You may have been just an average guy a few weeks ago, but now you?re a vampire; suffering and cruelty is your stock and trade.

As you acclimatise to this new existence, you start to adapt. You already don?t have to look at yourself in the mirror, but now you?re learning to hide the rest of yourself behind your new definition of what you are. You are a demon. Once you accept that, it becomes very easy to do very nasty things to a very nice person.

Then, when the game ends, you realise what?s happened and you learn something about yourself. That?s why Vampire: Bloodlines is one of my favourite games.

Change.org latest victim of DDoS attacks after hosting online petition to release Chinese activist

Change.org, an online petitioning platform, is the latest victim of an organized distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack allegedly originating from China, believed to be caused by the site?s call to release artist Ai Weiwei from custody.

Under the DDoS tactic, malicious codes infect computers to trigger mass attacks against targeted websites. The attacks, which started late Sunday, have nearly brought down the site. According to Change.org founder Ben Rattray, ?the current attack originates from an expanding group of computers primarily based in China, and has yet to stop.?

Change.org was attacked after it has hosted an online petition calling for the release of Chinese artist Ai Weiwei, a popular Chinese activist detained by the Chinese government. The petition is one of Change.org?s most successful international campaigns, attracting almost 100,000 people from 175 countries.

?It?s pretty clear the attack is in response to the campaign,? Rattray said. Despite Change.org being blocked in China, Rattray speculates that the computers involved in the DDoS attack are managing to find a way to circumvent the country?s national Internet firewall.

There?s really no way to be certain where the attacks originate from because there?s also the possibility that the computers are under the control of hackers based in another country.
