Hardware 22 - The Second Day Magazine

Posted on 23rd Apr 2011 at 09:52 by Podcast with 2 comments

It?s podcast time again, and this time we?re talking about all the lovely hardware we?ve seen in our labs over the last few weeks. Clive starts off by telling us all about the AMD Radeon HD 6790, and why it?s only likely to be around for a relatively short period of time.

We also get chance to quiz Antony on the Silverstone TJ11, which it was his pleasure to review. The case is humungous, but isn?t quite the water-cooling behemoth we expected. Paul then gives us an account of his recent trip to Istanbul to cover the MSI Master Overclocking Arena European finals. Extreme overclocking and benchmarking is a funny old world, and it?s always interesting to get to see the action first hand.

Finally, we find time to discuss some of the larger tech news stories such as Seagate swallowing up Samsung?s hard disk production division, and the rumour that AMD is planning to mass produce its Radeon HD 7000-series GPUs in May.

Hardware 22 - The Second Day Magazine

As always, we've also set up our weekly competition too, the lucky winner of which will walk away with a Speedlink Strike FX wireless gamepad. This game pad is compatible with both the PC and PlayStation 3, and functions at distances of up to 10m.

As ever, the bit-tech hardware podcast features music by Brad Sucks, and was recorded on Shure microphones. You can download the podcast direct, listen in-browser or subscribe through iTunes using the links below. Also, be sure to let us know your thoughts about the discussion in the forums.

Amazon to Apple: the term "app store" is generic

Last month, Amazon launched its own Android App Store and was promptly sued by Apple for using the term "app store." Amazon has since responded in court, calling Apple's claim to the App Store trademark baseless, and pointing to a statement from Apple CEO Steve Jobs for evidence in its favor.

The Seattle-based online retailer has asked a federal judge in San Francisco to throw out Apple's trademark suit, calling the phrase "app store" generic and not something that Apple can claim for its exclusive use. In the 10-page filing (PDF, via GeekWire), Amazon quotes Jobs, who, when speaking on Apple's quarterly conference call last fall, repeatedly referred to app stores in a generic sense:

So there will be at least four app stores on Android, which customers must search among to find the app they want and developers will need to work with to distribute their apps and get paid. This is going to be a mess for both users and developers. Contrast this with Apple's integrated App Store, which offers users the easiest-to-use largest app store in the world, preloaded on every iPhone.

Microsoft started the legal battle against Apple's trademark of the term app store, and ended up effectively representing all the companies that want to or are already trying to use the phrase. Amazon now appears to be agree with Microsoft's core argument: that "app store" is as generic as "shoe store" or "toy store." As a result, the term should not belong to one company.

Three months ago, Microsoft asked the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) to reject Apple's application to trademark the term "App Store" because it is too generic. Apple countered back by reminding Microsoft that it successfully trademarked "Windows" a few decades ago.

Last month, Microsoft filed yet another legal filing against Apple, citing Amazon's new store as evidence that other companies need to be able to use the phrase to accurately describe their mobile application marketplaces. The issue is still in the hands of the US Trademark Trial and Appeal Board and will hopefully be resolved in the next few months.

Sony PSN offline until next week, user accounts compromised

As you've undoubtedly heard, Sony's PlayStation Network was taken offline last week following a security breach. Sony remained incredibly quiet about the matter through the weekend, but with mounting pressure from gamers, the company has finally released an official explanation. According to a post on the PlayStation blog, Sony discovered that between April 17 and 19, certain PSN and Qriocity account details were compromised in a network intrusion.

In response to the break-in, Sony flipped the switch on its PSN and Qriocity services and hired an external security firm to perform a complete investigation. At this time, it's believed that the attacker obtained access to your name, address, country, email address, birthdate, PSN/Qriocity name and password, as well as your handle/PSN online ID. It's also possible that your password security answers were obtained along with any sub-account information.

Sony says there's no evidence that users' credit card data was taken, but it can't rule out the possibility. If such information was snagged, it would "only" be your credit card number and expiration date, but not your security code. As such, the company recommends that you keep track of your financial statements and credit reports, noting that US residents are entitled by law to one free credit report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus:

  • Experian: 888-397-3742; P.O. Box 9532, Allen, TX 75013
  • Equifax: 800-525-6285; P.O. Box 740241, Atlanta, GA 30374-0241
  • TransUnion: 800-680-7289; Fraud Victim Assistance Division, P.O. Box 6790, Fullerton, CA 92834-6790

"At no charge, U.S. residents can have these credit bureaus place a 'fraud alert' on your file that alerts creditors to take additional steps to verify your identity prior to granting credit in your name. This service can make it more difficult for someone to get credit in your name. Note, however, that because it tells creditors to follow certain procedures to protect you, it also may delay your ability to obtain credit while the agency verifies your identity."

With your name, contact information and login credentials in the hands of a criminal party, it would be wise to change your passwords to other online services. Additionally, the company suggests that its users should be extra cautious about email, telephone and postal scams that request sensitive information. Sony itself will never contact you in any way to request "personally identifiable" information such as your credit card or social security number.

If you have further concerns about identity theft, Sony's blog post contains contact information for the FTC and your state's Attorney General. As for PSN's recovery, Sony says the service will remain offline until its investigation is complete and it implements the proper security measures to prevent this from reoccurring. At the time of writing, the company estimates that "some services" will be back online within a week -- surely longer than you wanted to hear.

Political Memo: As Ron Paul Weighs Presidential Run, His Issues Are Already Being Debated

Speaking at an event in Des Moines, Mr. Paul, 75, said he would decide by the end of May whether to become a candidate and stressed the reasons that he believed he might wield more influence over the shape, direction and conversation of the Republican contest this time around.

?The country is already quite different,? Mr. Paul said. ?There are literally millions of more people concerned about the very things I talked about four years ago. It is the excessive spending, the entitlement system, the foreign policy, as well as the monetary system.?

As a potential candidate, Mr. Paul, a 14-term congressman, has a larger national profile in 2011 than he did in 2007, when he ran for the Republican nomination as a largely unknown lawmaker. The issues he says are important ? concern about federal debt, spending and the size of government ? are front and center this year. And his passionate libertarian followers are, if anything, better organized as part of the Tea Party movement, which includes more mainstream Republicans.

?I think he?ll play a bigger role this time than he did four years ago,? said Trey Grayson, the director of the Institute of Politics at the Harvard Kennedy School. ?You can?t underestimate someone who has a passionate following who can raise money.?

Mr. Paul remains, by choice, at the fringes of the Republican Party?s ideology, issuing critiques of the Federal Reserve (he calls the central bankers ?counterfeiters?) and voting against most legislation that in his view increases the size of the federal government.

He tends to pay little attention to standard political conventions. He is fiercely antiwar at a time when Republicans have typically expressed staunch support for the military efforts overseas. He calls for deep and painful sacrifices by important political constituencies.

Surveys suggest that Mr. Paul?s support remains low. In most recent polls, Mr. Paul receives just over 5 percent of the support from potential Republican voters. That is similar to the level of support he received in contests four years ago, when he served mostly as a foil for discussion during the debates.

Mr. Grayson, who lost a bid for the Republican Senate nomination in Kentucky to Mr. Paul?s son Rand, said he did not believe that Mr. Paul would win the nomination. But he said the Tea Party energy ?is going to be very helpful, especially in a caucus state like Iowa, where it doesn?t take many votes? to win.

In the 2008 campaign, Mr. Paul?s message of fiscal discipline, harsh spending cuts and dire warnings about the deficit seemed out of sync with the relative affluence through most of 2007. Now, the debate consuming Washington is about the issues that Mr. Paul cares about: the debt, the deficit and the consequences of failing to shrink the size of government.

Drew Ivers, a member of the state central committee of Iowa?s Republican Party and the chairman of Mr. Paul?s Iowa leadership team, is convinced that this year could be different.

?Ron Paul finds himself right in the epicenter of the three or four or five of the most critical and controversial issues in our nation today. The spending. The war. The financial crisis,? Mr. Ivers said in an interview Tuesday. ?That?s how snowballs develop, you know. They start small, and they get bigger as they roll downhill.?

During the 2008 campaign, Mr. Paul proved to be a better-than-expected fund-raiser, but he did it late in the game. In December 2007, just days before the Iowa caucus, Mr. Paul raised $6 million in a one-day ?money bomb? that was timed to coincide with the 234th anniversary of the Boston Tea Party. This year, Mr. Paul would most likely tap into his donor base much earlier, giving him the opportunity to advertise on television throughout the primary season.

He could also be helped by less competition for donor dollars than in 2007, when he was competing against a field of a dozen Republican candidates, including several with deep pockets or a proven ability to raise millions.

Mr. Paul also won?t have to spend so much time in this campaign explaining who he is and what he believes. When he started his bid for the Republican nomination in January 2007, he was a little-known member of Congress. A Washington Post poll in February 2007 put him at just 1 percent, if the vote were conducted then. Four years later, Mr. Paul?s poll numbers remain low, but his participation in the 2008 debates and his frequent appearances on television have kept him in the news.

WPCandy previews WordPress distraction-free editor

WPCandy has posted up a video previewing the distraction-free editor that WordPress developers are hoping to ship with WordPress 3.2.

The interface is reminiscent of OmmWriter more than any other desktop distraction-free writing application, with bounding boxes that fade away as you begin writing. It?s not apparent from the video if the bounding boxes are resizeable as in OmmWriter.

The distraction-free editor will replace the current full-screen editor. It?s still very early in development, having only just hit the development releases of WordPress, so it?s a great time for feedback ? and a great time not to rage about aspects you don?t like.
