This week, Clive, Harry, Paul and Antony discuss Folding@home, going through what it's all about and what hardware you should be using to generate the most points per day.

Also on the agenda are some of our thoughts about factory-overclocked graphics cards. We discuss where in the market these provide real value, and when you?d be better of trading up to a better GPU altogether.

Harry also treats us all to a very long comprehensive run down of the current state of the SSD market, and what developments we can expect to see there over the next few months.

Finally, we take a look at AMD?s soon to be retired Phenom brand, and discuss what AMD got right and wrong with this chip-generation. We also take a look back at the conclusions we drew from our first experiences with Phenom-branded processors, and how our thoughts back then compare to our thoughts now.

As always, we've also set up our weekly competition, the lucky winner of which will walk away with a Speedlink Strike FX wireless gamepad. This gamepad is compatible with both the PC and PlayStation 3, and functions at distances of up to 10m.

As ever, the bit-tech hardware podcast features music by Brad Sucks, and was recorded on Shure microphones. You can download the podcast direct, listen in-browser or subscribe through iTunes using the links below. Also, be sure to let us know your thoughts about the discussion in the forums.

Apple baby Aza Raskin on the secrets of great User Interface

?Whilst most kids were carried around in the stroller, I was carried around in the first Macintosh carry case,? says Aza Raskin whose father  Jef Raskin was the expert user interface designer that built the Macintosh project for Apple in the late 1970s.

Having grown up in the thick of computer development, Aza went on to become head of user experience at Mozilla Labs. In 2008, Raskin and the other Humanized employees were part of a hire-out by the Mozilla Corporation. In 2010, Raskin was appointed Creative Lead for Firefox and is now, at the tender age of 27,  working on his latest startup Massive Health, currently in stealth, which is building a number of iPhone apps to bring innovation to healthcare.

Aza and I talk about Chrome over Firefox, if his ambition in building products with beautiful UI will lead him to become the next Steve Jobs and what he likes to do at the weekends to let off steam.

The Caucus: Gingrich to Announce Candidacy

Trying to tap into the spontaneity of Twitter and Facebook, Newt Gingrich, the former speaker of the House, will announce his campaign for the Republican nomination for president on Wednesday by way of the two popular social networking sites, his spokesman, Rick Tyler, said in a Twitter post on Monday.

Mr. Gingrich has been hinting at a formal announcement for a while. On March 3, he persuaded many in the Washington press corps to travel to Georgia, suggesting he would reveal his intentions then. But instead, Mr. Gingrich said he would ?test the waters? by establishing a committee that could accept contributions and allow him to travel the country.

Since then, Mr. Gingrich has increasingly seemed like a candidate. Last week, he hired Rob Johnson, a well-known strategist from Texas, to be the campaign manager for his presidential bid-to-be.

Mr. Gingrich stepped down as House speaker in 1998 after acknowledging that he had an extramarital affair with Callista Bisek, then a House staff member and now his wife. A presidential campaign may give Mr. Gingrich an opportunity for political redemption.

As his spokesman noted, Mr. Gingrich plans to begin that effort on the Fox News show hosted by Sean Hannity, a favorite of conservative politicians. (Mr. Gingrich was himself a paid contributor to Fox News until his contract was terminated last week.) And Mr. Gingrich plans to speak at Georgia?s Republican convention on Friday.

You can?t buy this amazing Portal turret prop

Unfortunately this Portal turret is a one-off prop made by animator Ryan Palser and it?s not available for sale. Otherwise I would be all over it. Ryan creates models of in-game weapons as a break from being an animator for games like Guitar Hero. He?s produced weapons from Fallout and other famous franchises but this turret from the Valve hit Portal is an incredible piece of work.

He?s careful to point out that this is a turret from the original Portal as the designs have changed a bit in Portal 2. Regardless, it?s still amazing.

You can see a full set of making of pics on Ryan?s flickr account. His blog Kronos Props also has some other examples of his work like A3-21?s rifle from Fallout 3.

GE and EADS to Print Parts for Airplanes

GE is starting a new lab at its global research headquarters in Niskayuna, New York, that's devoted to turning three-dimensional printing technology into a viable means of manufacturing functional parts for a range of its businesses, including those involving health care and aerospace. The company aims to take advantage of the technology's potential to make parts that are lighter, perform better, and cost less than parts made with conventional manufacturing techniques.

Technology for printing three-dimensional objects has existed for decades, but its applications have been largely limited to novelty items and specialized custom fabrication, such as the making of personalized prosthetics. But  the technology has now improved to the point that these printers can make intricate objects out of durable materials , including ceramics and metals such as titanium and aluminum,  with resolution on the scale of tens of micrometers.

As a result, companies such as GE and the European defense and aerospace giant EADS are working to apply it in situations more akin to conventional manufacturing, where large numbers of the same part are needed.

GE's first application of the technology could be ultrasound machines that are cheaper and perform better than current versions. One of the most expensive parts of an ultrasound machine is the device that transforms electronic signals into sound and back again?the part that's pressed against a person's skin during an ultrasound. These transducers are made up of thousands of tiny columns spaced just 30 to 40 micrometers apart, with each column being extremely thin, about eight to 10 times taller than they are wide. It's extremely difficult to make such parts using casting, since it's hard to free the part from the mold. So GE makes them using a precise cutting tool that very slowly carves away at a chunk of ceramic. The process is slow and expensive and can only be used to make a limited range of shapes.

Now GE has developed a new printing technology that spreads out a thin layer of a slurry composed of ceramic embedded in a polymer precursor. When a pattern of ultraviolet light is projected on this layer, the material solidifies only where it's been exposed to the light. Another layer of slurry is spread out on top of this and flashed with light, and the structure is built up in this way, layer by layer.

The process is still not ready for mass production, says Prabhjot Singh, a mechanical engineer and project manager at GE Research. But because the process is faster and saves material, "it could achieve orders of magnitude reduction in cost," he says. GE designers using the new process could improve the performance of the transducer because they won't be as constrained in the types of shapes they can make. This could lead to higher resolution ultrasounds.

Apple overtakes Google to become the world?s most valuable brand

The success of iPhone, iPad and Macbook products has helped Apple push ahead of Google to become the world?s most valuable brand, according to a new study by global brands agency Millward Brown.

Worth over $153 billion, almost half the company?s market capitalisation, Apple ended Google?s four year reign as the most valuable brand, having already beaten Microsoft to become the world?s most valuable technology company last year. Apple?s brand value grew 83% from the previous year, whereas Google?s fell by 2% to $111 billion.

The dominance of the iPad and continued success of its iPhone smartphone and Macbook notebook products have propelled Apple to the top of Brandz?s top 100 (PDF), capturing consumer attention despite higher pricing than products provided by its rivals.

Peter Walshe, global brands director of Millward Brown believes this is the reason why Apple is so successful, suggesting that along with the company?s attention to detail and increasing adoption in corporate environments, it has been able to dictate the markets in which it operates:

?Apple is breaking the rules in terms of its pricing model. It?s doing what luxury brands do, where the higher price the brand is, the more it seems to underpin and reinforce the desire.?

?Obviously, it has to be allied to great products and a great experience, and Apple has nurtured that.?

Of the top 10 brands, six were technology and telecoms companies. Google was slightly ahead of IBM at three, Microsoft at number five, AT&T at number seven and China Mobile in ninth. Online retailer Amazon also slightly edged Walmart as the world?s most valuable retail brand.

Facebook entered the top 100 and ranked 35th, valued at $19.1 billion, while Chinese search engine Baidu rose to number 29 from 46.

BrandZ valuations ranks similarly to how investment banks would value brands, basing in part on brand-equity tracking surveys and financial data from Bloomberg and analyst reports. The data calculates the earnings attributable to a brand, how much of the earnings can be attributed to a close bond with its customers and growth potential for the brand-driven earnings.
