Intel's 22nm "Silvermont" Atom has 3D transistors, coming in 2013

Speaking with anonymous industry sources, CNET has received fresh details about Intel's upcoming Atom processors. The chipmaker is reportedly developing a brand new system-on-a-chip architecture infused with its recently announced 3D transistors. Codenamed "Silvermont," the chip will fully capitalize on Intel's 22nm fabrication and tri-gate transistors to deliver drastically improved integration, performance and power efficiency.

While that sounds great, you're probably looking for some numbers to back the hype. Unfortunately, it seems Silvermont's specifications and generational advancements remain under lock and key. For what it's worth, when Intel unveiled its 3D transistors last week it claimed 22nm parts with the tri-gate technology will boost performance by 37% while reducing power consumption by 50% over the company's existing 32nm chips.

However, that announcement largely focused on Intel's next-generation Ivy Bridge processors, the 22nm shrink of Sandy Bridge, also armed with 3D transistors. In other words, we don't know how those figures translate to the company's ultra-low-voltage chips -- and it'll likely be a while before we find out. Intel's 32nm Atom, codenamed Cedarview, is due sometime in the second half of 2011, while Silvermont isn't expected to launch until 2013.

In slightly less speculative news, CPU-World has published the specs of three new Sandy Bridge-based Celeron processors: the G440, G530 and G540. The first is a 35W single-core chip with a 1.6GHz CPU clock and 650/1000MHz GPU clock. The other two are 65W parts with an 850/1000MHz GPU clock, but the CPU clock differs by 100MHz (2.4GHz versus 2.5GHz). All three carry 2MB of cache and will only have "basic" core features.

U.S. Government Backs Concentrated Photovoltaics

A relatively new type of solar power called concentrated photovoltaic (CPV) technology is getting a $90.6 million boost in the form of a conditional loan guarantee from the U.S. Department of Energy. The government backing will help with financing for a 30-megawatt facility near Alamosa, Colorado, which will be one of the largest concentrated-photovoltaics plants ever built.

The project is part of a surge in photovoltaic projects in the United States over the last few years. A total of 878 megawatts' worth of solar panels were installed last year, up from just 79 megawatts in 2005. This year total installation is expected to double 2010 levels, according to the Solar Energy Industries Association. The industry is starting to approach the scale of the wind industry, which saw over 5,000 megawatts of capacity installed last year (down from over 10,000 the year before).

Concentrated photovoltaics is different from concentrated solar power, which is also known as solar thermal. In solar thermal plants, mirrors and lenses concentrate sunlight to generate the temperatures needed to produce steam that drives a turbine and generator.

In CPV, arrays of lenses are used to focus sunlight onto small solar cells. The concentrated light improves the efficiency of the cells and reduces the amount of expensive solar cell material needed to produce a given  amount of electricity. Amonix, the company that will be supplying the concentrated photovoltaic systems for the project, says its system can generate twice as much power per acre as conventional solar panel technology. It uses 23.5-meter-wide panels with more than 1,000 pairs of lenses and solar cells on each. The panels are mounted on tracking systems that keep the lenses pointed within 0.8 degrees of the angle of the sun throughout the day, to ensure that light falls on the system's 0.7-square-centimeter solar cells.

CPV accounts for a small part of the solar market now?just 0.1 percent. That's largely because it's newer than ordinary photovoltaic technology and has been more expensive; it's more complex, since the lenses have to precisely track the sun. Lowering the cost of CPV will require scaling up. The biggest CPV plants built so far have been in the range of one or two megawatts, while the largest flat-panel plants are 85 and 92 megawatts.

Some analysts expect the CPV market to more than double every year through 2015 as more companies scale up production. At least one other company, Soitec, is planning a 200-megawatt CPV plant in the next few years.

AT&T reps questioning Best Buy employees over WP7 knowledge [Rumor]

TNW Quick Hit:

Word on the street is that AT&T is so serious about its position inside of the world of Windows Phone 7, that it is sending reps to Best Buy stores to quiz the employees over their level of knowledge about the phone line.

The quizzes, which according to WinExtra are purely verbal, do include a possible prize: ?the winner of the quiz gets a free Windows Phone from AT&T.? We are not sure if this is a per store, or per state deal, but the prize on the line might lead some Best Buy denizens to brush up on what they know.

Why is AT&T doing this? There are only two reasonable answers. The first is that competition for Android market share is so hot at the moment that it is almost scorched earth, it costs more to grow than it makes to do so, perhaps. And secondly, with WP7 finally launching on Verizon soon (don?t ask for an exact date, all we have is more rumors), it could be that AT&T does not want to lose WP7 market share to ?Big Red.?

WinExtra agrees with us: ?The reason for these quiz apparently is that AT&T is putting a really big push on for Windows Phone and is wanting the Best Buy employees to start promoting Windows Phone over their Android offerings.?

What is quite interesting is that the lines between carriers seem to be becoming increasingly less phone-centric. That is, carriers are back to touting the strength of their networks over what phones they have. Why? Because even the iPhone these days has two lovers in the US alone; handsets just aren?t that unique anymore. And this is especially true in the Android space, where even the most technology focused can?t keep track of what is coming out at all times.

Sure, it?s an iOS and Android world, but Windows Phone 7 seems to have made a friend in AT&T, which is not a bad partner to have in the US market space. This move will lead to more WP7 handsets being sold.

Turn your iPhone into a money printing machine with Gigwalk

For many of us, our iPhones are essential parts of our business lives. We literally can?t get work done without them. For the large majority of people though, the iPhone is just a way to keep in touch with people and waste time on the web or with games.

Gigwalk [App Store, free] changes that completely, turning your iPhone into a way to earn money with the investment of a bit of your time and basic photo skills.

The premise of Gigwalk is simple. An iPhone app allows Gigwalkers to see a job in their area, the money that they will earn for it and the instructions for completion. Jobs may consist of a variety of tasks, all of which can be completed right from the iPhone.

A typical gig might consist of visiting a local restaurant, checking in at the location, shooting some pictures of the menu and decor, answering a questionnaire about the state of the business and posting that information to the Gigwalk system. The process can take a few minutes or require more time, depending on the complexity.

Gigwalk also pushes gigs to you based on the skills that you enter in your profile when you first fire up the app.

Gigs are priced starting at $3 for simple tasks but ramp up as you earn more ?street cred? from successfully completed gigs. Some of the gigs I saw went as high as $10-15. This means that if you?re in an area where gigs have been posted you could spend your Saturday walking around the city and picking up some nice cash with only a phone.

The concept is a really slick one, the idea of a mobile workforce that you can access for a set of tasks is one that?s really hot at the moment. In addition the Gigwalk app is incredibly well executed with an easy, well designed interface and super sharp design.

The whole experience makes you want to use it, which is many times not the case with systems that have monetary rewards. Just getting paid is often not enough for people to want to use your app and the guys at Gigwalk realize this. In this interview with Robert Scoble, the Gigwalk team discusses their plans.

It?s interesting to note that many of the top Gigwalkers are apparently making in the thousands of dollars a month, perhaps not enough for a primary job but easily enough for a nice second paycheck. Gigwalkers are paid via Paypal within 7 days once a gig is submitted and approved by the customer.

The flipside to the Gigwalk story is the side of the businesses and individual posting gigs up for users to complete. With Gigwalk?s web interface they have the ability to create gigs very quickly, adding requirements for the gig and a location where it is to be performed. The tasks can be built from a list of tasks including photo, video, audio, free text, multiple choice and yes/no questions.

There is even provision for having people download a third-party app that the user can test and give feedback on, creating a crowd sourced reviewing engine for apps. Currently the Gigwalk site allows anyone from individuals posting up one or two gigs to businesses posting thousands of gigs at a time. The possibilities are pretty staggering.

For instance, if I?m an individual who wants to get a good idea of what a restaurant looks like that I?m going to be taking clients to for dinner when I land in LA, I could post up a gig to just shoot me some photos and verify the menu. The scalability of the system means that a business could just as easily build a database of current photos and reviews of hundreds of their locations in a fraction of the time it would normally take to hire contractors.

Gigwalk is available from the App Store now for free. Anyone can grab it and start performing gigs, earning money and eventually street cred to work their way up to higher tiers of earning. Gigwalk is one to watch as it will be interesting to see how far they can take this crowd-sourced tasking.

Political Memo: Weighing a White House Bid as Opening a Door to Past Pain

But as leading Republicans step up their efforts to urge Mr. Daniels to run for president, the attention has suddenly turned to Mrs. Daniels, who makes her debut here on Thursday when she delivers a keynote address at the spring dinner of the Indiana Republican Party.

Her willingness to take on a public role has increased the speculation about his intentions. But it has also come at the price of increased scrutiny on the couple?s private life, something Mr. Daniels had seemed to have on his mind for months as he made it clear that family considerations would weigh heavily on his decision.

While much is known about Mr. Daniels in Republican circles, where he is viewed as a fiscally focused, budget-cutting, pragmatic-thinking conservative, there is one period of his life that has remained almost entirely private ? until now.

He has been married twice ? to the same wife.

Should he run, that chapter in his life would no doubt be picked over in public and become a part of the personal narrative that springs up around any serious candidate: in this case a three-year gap in their marriage in the 1990s, when she filed for divorce, moved to California with a new husband and left Mr. Daniels to raise their four daughters, then ages 8 to 14. She later returned and remarried him.

He has discussed it only once publicly, telling The Indianapolis Star in 2004: ?If you like happy endings, you?ll love our story. Love and the love of children overcame any problems.?

Their story is in some ways an antidote to a string of philandering male politicians. But it is a topic that Mr. Daniels does not relish delving into, several friends said. And it has been one of the factors as he weighs whether to run for president, a rare position where scrutiny begins and privacy ends whether or not one gets the job.

The marriages of many political figures break up after they leave office ? the latest example coming this week with the announcement of Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver?s separation ? but the Daniels case provides a different look at the intersection of public and private lives.

The deliberations about whether Mr. Daniels will join the Republican presidential race have elevated from whispers to headlines in recent weeks as fund-raisers, activists and party leaders have openly lamented the party?s slate of candidates already in the race.

Even while acknowledging that her appearance at the party gathering on Thursday would lead to speculation about his political intentions, he sought to play down its significance.

?Cheri hasn?t even attended one of these, let alone appeared at one of them,? he said in a recent interview. He added, ?Tea leaves started getting read ? and I get it.?

Mr. Daniels has declined to say what his wife thinks about the idea of him running for president.

?I?m not going to speak either to that or for her, and it?s kind of between us,? he told reporters here the other day. ?But I?ll just say, I love her and I love the family we?ve got, and you don?t lightly trifle with that.?

A group of top Republican contributors met with Mr. Daniels in Indianapolis this week. Even in a private session, one participant said, he did not disclose whether his family had signed off on the notion of a presidential campaign. He argued that he believes he could beat President Obama, but did not leave them with a strong sense that he is intent on running.

But the timing of the speech by Mrs. Daniels, and the fact that she agreed to make her debut before a crowd of more than 1,000 people and a live national cable television audience, has intensified the speculation about a presidential run.

A springtime of debate about whether he will jump in has developed into the talk of the town, with the front-page of The Indianapolis Star on Wednesday asking, ?Is Cheri Daniels ready to take the plunge??

?This is the most anticipated political address by a first lady in Indiana history,? said Brian Howey, editor of the influential newsletter Howey Politics Indiana. ?I suspect it?s going to be more about love and life, food drives and elementary school literacy programs than 21st century presidential politics, but in the mystery of Mitch and his possible presidential aspirations, it will be another piece in a very intricate puzzle.?

Indeed, Republicans here do not expect Mrs. Daniels to talk directly about the presidential ambitions of her husband. (Except, one friend said, to poke a bit of fun at him.) She also has never publicly discussed their divorce and is not expected to suddenly do so in the not-so-intimate setting of a hotel ballroom filled with political activists.

In conversations here this week, several Republicans who are supportive of a presidential bid by Mr. Daniels said they hoped his wife saw the outpouring of enthusiasm for his candidacy at the dinner and that it became a factor in their decision. Family permission for Mr. Daniels does not pave the way to the White House ? or even ensure that he would win the party?s nomination ? but it is a first step that Republicans are watching for as a signal of his intentions.

As the first lady of Indiana, Mrs. Daniels, 61, has promoted literacy, health and fitness programs. She also won a third-place ribbon in a cow-milking contest last August at the Indiana State Fair and threw out the first pitch at the opening game of the Indianapolis Indians in April. (A longtime baseball fan, she is the granddaughter of Billy Herman, a Hall of Fame second baseman who played for the Chicago Cubs and the Brooklyn Dodgers.)

Mr. Daniels said he would decide whether to join the presidential race in the coming weeks.

If he does run, Republicans here believe, Mrs. Daniels will not dramatically change the distant role she has played in his previous campaigns or during his time at the White House as political director to President Ronald Reagan and budget director to President George W. Bush. She explained her reasoning in a 2005 interview with Indianapolis Woman magazine, saying, ?They did not ask me to sit in on the job interview.?

?I saw the campaign the same way,? she said, ?as an interview.?

Ford, Google working on cars that adapt to driving habits

U.S. automaker Ford is partnering with Google to create an in-vehicle system that could receive data in real time and maximize the efficiency of hybrid or electric cars. The collaboration centers on something called the Google Prediction API, which in an optimized form, could help with things like suggesting the most fuel-efficient route taking into account real-time information such as traffic conditions and adapt based on a user's previous behavior.

Ford already offers some cloud-based entertainment and information services through its Ford SYNC in-vehicle system. But this technology will be exclusively focused on the driver, logging and analyzing his driving history to anticipate his needs. In one scenario outlined by Ford engineers, by studying a user's driving patterns the system would try to predict where the driver is going and then optimize the upcoming trip with regards to fuel efficiency and pollution, deciding where a hybrid car should use the gasoline engine and where it should employ the battery.

Google's cloud computing will provide more computing power and data storage capacity than could reasonably be packed into a car. There aren't many details available for now but Ford was quick to stress that the Google Prediction API will be an option in its cars, not a basic feature, and any information collected will be encrypted. With Google?s not so great record on privacy you can understand why they are anticipating some concern from users.

The collaboration is in the preliminary stages of R&D, so it will still be a few years before we see cars with this sort of technology on the market, but Ford maintains it is committed to the project. The company has been working on predictive driver behavior for two years and says a production-ready system could be here in four to eight years.

Gaming 25 - Hegway Seaven

Posted on 1st May 2011 at 10:28 by Podcast with 14 comments

It's only a short week this week what with all the bank holidays and such like but Paul, Joe and Clive still managed to find time to sit down and mull over some of the goings on in the gaming world.

First up, predictably, is the current situation with Sony's PlayStation Network. The service is currently down due to a hacking attack and Sony are currently rushing to rebuild the network from the ground up. This is little comfort to the 75 million PSN users though who have been told that the hackers made off with their personal details and possibly their credit card details too.

We then move on to discuss Portal 2 and what we thought of one of the most eagerly anticipated games of the last 12 months. There is no doubt that the game is great fun, but there are a few niggles in there too.

Finally up for debate is Nintendo's announcement that it's working on the successor to it's immensely popular Wii console. The console is currently titled Project Cafe and there are only a few shaky details about the specifications of it but it's interesting to see Nintendo setting out its stall relatively early on in the next-gen console wars.

As always, we've also set up our weekly competition too, the lucky winner of which will walk away with a Speedlink Strike FX wireless gamepad. This game pad is compatible with both the PC and PlayStation 3, and functions at distances of up to 10m.

Chattp augments your browser with real-time chat panel

Here?s something pretty cool. The good people at Harmony Park Labs, the ?cultural construction company?, have given us a sneak peak at this neat little web tool.

Chattp.com (correct pronunciation yet to be clarified?) augments your browser window by adding a real-time chat panel to the left-hand side, whilst you continue to browse a website.

You simply go to Chattp.com, enter the URL of the website you?d like to ?Chattify?, and the website becomes embedded within a unique Chattp URL. You can then invite multiple people to enter a conversation by forwarding them the URL.

Anyone with a chattp link for a specific page or website will be able to participate in that chat, and each link is unique, so multiple chats can take place on any particular url. This is also similar to something that Marginize has done, so there may be a bit of trend in this area emerging.

Chattp is an alpha release at the moment, so there may be bugs and stuff. Here?s how The Next Web homepage looks once it?s been given a good going over by Chattp. Or, why not Chattify your own URL and see exactly how it works?
