HP intros new Pavilion Elite h8, p7, Slimline s5 desktops

HP has revamped its consumer desktop offering, introducing three new product lines: the Pavilion Elite h8, Pavilion p7, and Pavilion Slimline s5. The first represents HP's new premium desktop, featuring the largest form factor and broadest spectrum of features. Units will be configurable with AMD Phenom or Intel Core processors, as well as AMD Radeon or Nvidia GeForce graphics cards.

The will offer up to three storage drives, HP's Beats Audio technology and a front panel brimming with connectivity, including composite audio and video, four USB 2.0 ports, two USB 3.0 ports, FireWire, and support for various flash cards. HP also touts tool-free access to frequently upgraded components such as hard drives. The HPE h8 will be available online starting June 19 from $599.

The Pavilion p7 series will reportedly replace the Pavilion p6700 line as HP's mainstream desktop offering, covering various price points starting at $299. While exact specifications aren't available yet, you can bet the p7's hardware options won't be quite as lavish as the Pavilion Elite's, but there will be both AMD and Intel-based models. Systems will launch on Wednesday, May 18.

Stylish enough to leave on your desk and small enough to stash in a cabinet, the Slimline s5 series is supposedly half the size of typical desktops -- though we haven't seen exact measurments. Despite its size, HP says the s5 will offer sufficient performance and storage for everyday use. Pricing kicks off at $329.99 and systems will launch via select US retailers on June 19.

All three desktops will ship with HP's LinkUp software, which lets you remotely connect to other systems on your network. To accompany the new machines, HP has also announced its x2301 Micro Thin LED-backlit monitor, due June 10 for $279.99. The 23-inch 1080p display measures only 9.8mm thick and features a brightness of 250cd/m2, as well as D-Sub, DVI and HDMI outputs.

Sensing Brain Pressure without Surgery

One of the most important things to monitor in patients who've sustained a severe blow to the head or a serious hemorrhage is pressure in the brain. This can reveal an increase in the brain's volume, thanks to bleeding, swelling, or other factors, which can compress and damage brain tissue and starve the organ of blood. Increases in pressure have also been implicated in other, less critical neurological problems, such as migraines and repeated concussions. But current methods for monitoring intracranial pressure are highly invasive?a neurosurgeon drills a hole in the skull and inserts a catheter, which carries a risk of infection.

Thomas Heldt, a research scientist at the Research Laboratory of Electronics at MIT, and collaborators Faisal Kashif and George Verghese, also at MIT, hope to change that with a new, noninvasive method for monitoring intracranial pressure. While the technology is still in its early stages of development, initial studies on data from comatose patients show that it is about as accurate as intracranial monitoring with a catheter and more accurate than other, less invasive options, which involve inserting a catheter into the tissue layers between the inner skull and the brain. Heldt presented the research at the Next-Generation Medical Electronic Systems workshop at MIT earlier this month.

"If we had a way of determining pressure in the field, even a simple heuristic, like whether pressure is greater than 20 mmHg (millimeters of mercury?the standard measure at which physicians intervene), it would be hugely helpful," says Rajiv Gupta, director of the Ultra-High-Resolution Volume CT Lab at Massachusetts General Hospital, in Boston. "Triage is based on that." Gupta was not involved in the research.

To assess pressure noninvasively, Heldt's team started by creating a simple circuit model of pressure in the brain using knowledge of brain anatomy and how blood and cerebrospinal fluid flow through the organ. He then developed an algorithm to calculate intracranial pressure for a given level of arterial blood pressure and cerebral blood flow. Arterial blood pressure can be measured either with a catheter inserted into the wrist, or indirectly with a finger cuff, a device similar to an arm blood-pressure cuff but which provides continuous readings of blood pressure. A noninvasive ultrasound technique known as transcranial Doppler can detect velocity of cranial blood flow, which is directly related to the flow itself.

Researchers validated the approach using previously collected data from 45 comatose patients. The estimate matched the gold standard measure with a deviation of about eight to nine mmHg. Other methods for measuring pressure, such as catheters inserted into the space between the skull and brain tissue, vary by 10 mmHg from reading to reading in the same brain.

Thoughts on Jumping

It may seem an odd subject to focus on, as jumping doesn't seem to be very important on the face of it ? cut it out of a game, though, and it can make a huge difference. Games in which players can?t jump, or at the very least dodge or roll, can seem painfully slow, dull and static. Games in which players can jump around and use that movement to interact with the environment can seem immeasurably more fun because of it.

Take Half-Life 2, for example. It?s a game which nearly everyone would agree is well-made, decently written, fun and fast to play through. Now cast your mind back to the first scene in Kliener?s lab, where Gordon is first properly introduced to his allies, where the plot is given its first proper push and where you?re gifted with the HEV suit again. It?s a busy sequence; lots to do, lots to take in. You?d expect most players to pay close attention, at least the first time around.

Instead, every single player I know spends most of the time jumping around. Sometimes they try to jump on the scenery or knock over objects, other times they just leapfrog around the room when a simple stroll would suffice.

The same behaviour holds true in most other games too, I?ve found. When I played Beyond Good and Evil for the first time I hardly walked anywhere across the surface of Hillys; I rolled. In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, any hallway that involved walking for more than two seconds would be punctuated by periodic bounding. It seems like aberrant behaviour at first, yet it seems as though everyone does it. Why?

The reason, I think, is actually more to do with player speed than actually jumping. It?s not that people always like to move fast through games or that they enjoy spending time off the ground. Instead, it comes back to the original point ? games that don?t feature jumping can feel static and slow, so we use these features if they're present to help negate this effect. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a pretty fast-paced game, but running down a long corridor can still feel dull and empty; jumping as you run lets you vary the speed of the game. It creates tiny events of player agency and interaction, which stave off that staid feeling.

At the same time, adventure games that don?t feature anything so much as a sprint button? Don?t they seem increasingly slow and dated these days?

This isn?t the only reason why jumping is important, though. It helps you practice for later. It can be used to ward off boredom. It helps you to further explore the game space away from the key features. There's an abundance of smaller reasons; not least of which is possibly the fact that some people just have twitchy thumbs.

For the best games, though ? and this ties into a more overarching theory of mine about character speed ? the act of jumping can be a joy in itself. Master Chief?s jump, for example, is pleasantly floaty, while Dante?s can last for as long as you can hammer the attack buttons. Faith?s standing jump in Mirror?s Edge, however, is realistically awkward; she?s much better with running leaps.

Getting these nuances of player speed correct is one of the most subtle and important aspects of making a good game, especially for first person shooters. Trust me, I play a lot of really rubbish games and I can tell you that, if you throw all the cleverness away and boil it down to basic functionality, Half-Life 2 would still stand above Conspiracy Island 2 based solely on player speed. And the quality of the jumping.

Samsung starts rolling out Android 2.3 for Galaxy Tab, Galaxy S

Samsung has announced that the Android 2.3 (Gingerbread) upgrade to its Galaxy S, Galaxy Tab, and Galaxy Ace/Gio/Fit/mini devices has begun to roll out on Kies, the company's device management software. The upgrade will start with the Galaxy S in the UK and Nordic countries from mid-May, and gradually roll out to other European markets, North America, Southeast Asia, the Middle East Asia, Africa, and the rest of the world, according to the regional plan.

Samsung touts that the upgrade from Android 2.2 (codenamed Froyo) to Android 2.3 will give users a better user experience thanks to enhanced performance and an improved user interface:

  • Faster Performance ? Multimedia content now has a lower CPU consumption rate, while support for more powerful 3D Graphics enables an enhanced mobile gaming experience.
  • Upgraded Usability ? The user interface has been improved, enabling faster access and control and a more intuitive user experience. Users will also benefit from improved copy-and-paste functionality.

The Galaxy Tab features a TFT-LCD capacitive touch screen with a 1024 x 600 resolution, a 1GHz Cortex A8 Hummingbird Application processor, 512MB of RAM, 802.11n Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 3.0, 3G, and dual cameras for capturing still images, videos, or making video calls. It also has a robust HTML Web browsing experience with Adobe Flash 10.1, as well as support for a number of different formats, including DivX, Xvid, WMV, and MPEG-4.

The Galaxy S is available on all major US carriers; though on each it sports a slightly different name (but the Galaxy S moniker is present on each) and set of features. All of them still boast a 4-inch AMOLED touch screen display, 1Ghz Cortex A8 Hummingbird processor, 5-megapixel camera with LED flash and 720p video capture, six-axis sensor for gaming, up to 16GB of internal storage, Bluetooth, GPS, and Wi-Fi.

Although Samsung has already announced the Galaxy Tab 10.1, Galaxy Tab 8.9, and the Galaxy S II, it still supporting the older models. While the upgrade could have definitely come much sooner, it's still great to see that Samsung takes care of customers that buy the first version of its products.

Bing launches massive new Facebook integration

In a stunning move of corporate cooperation, Bing has teamed up with Facebook to deeply integrate the social giant into not just into its search results, but into its search algorithms, fundamentally changing the way it will create results.

According to Microsoft: ?The best decisions are not just fueled by facts, they require the opinions and emotions of your friends. Search is now more than a fact finder ? [In this update] we?re marrying fact-based search results with your friends? street smarts to combine the best data on the Web with the opinions of the people you trust the most and the collective IQ of the Web.?

What follows is the feature list of what Bing and Facebook have created:

Trusted Friends: People say seeing their friends? ?likes? within search results could help them make better decisions.

  • Improved ?Liked? Results, Answers and Sites: Instantly see which stories, content and sites your Facebook friends have ?liked,? from news stories, celebrities, movies, bands, brands and more. Bing shows the faces of up to three of your friends that like a search result, offering a visual, virtual seal of approval from your trusted social network.
  • Personalized Results: Bing surfaces content your friends have ?liked? from deep within search results to appear higher in the results. Because most people don?t go beyond page one of the results, they might be missing the best and most ?socially relevant? information.

Collective IQ: It?s not just your friends that can help you out. There?s also value in the larger brain trust of the Web. Bing is tapping into the Collective IQ of people for online decision making aiding scenarios like when your friends don?t have the right expertise, or you may not even know exactly what you?re looking for. Because people trust people ? and if your friends can?t help you decide, the rest of the Web can.

  • Popular Sites: Bing shows collective ?like? results related to trending topics, articles, and Facebook fan pages to find the most popular content. When you search for a recipe site, for example, you?ll see specific articles people have liked on that site to help you cut through the clutter and find recommendations from others ? both your friends and the broader Facebook community.
  • Social Messages: Bing not only shows you what your friends like and share online, but also what major brands and companies are saying.

Conversational Search: Many decisions require a discussion with your friends. By combining Facebook?s communication tools with Bing, search can become conversational ? taking decision-making on Bing from a passive experience to an active dialogue.

  • Expanded Facebook Profile Search: Now when searching for a specific person, Bing will provide a more in-depth bio snapshot, such as location, education, and employment details to help you find who you?re looking for more quickly.
  • Bing Travel Wish List: You can compare trips with friends on Facebook, get their input, suggest new destinations for friends, and learn more about a destination on Bing Travel.
  • Friends Who Live Here: Bing will show you which of your Facebook friends live or have lived in the city you?re traveling to, so you know exactly who to go to for travel tips.
  • Flight Deals: Bing will send you great deals on flights directly to your Facebook feed, for cities you?ve liked on Bing Travel.
  • Shared Shopping Lists: You can build a shopping list and share, compare and discuss it with your friends on Facebook.
  • Updated Bing Bar: The Bing Bar now includes a universal ?like? button enabling you to like any site you visit.
  • Of course, this is a new chapter for Bing. By tapping into Facebook?s social graph, the number two global search engine is betting that users will want to navigate the web with a little help from their friends.

Will it help Bing pick up market share in a Google world? Possibly. Instead of trying to beat Google at its own game, Microsoft is flexing its relationship with Facebook (of which it owns a part) to take a different path.

If Microsoft can convince the Facebooking hordes that searching with their friends is the way to go, then it might have a shot to boost its growth. It is now up to Google to make a move, will it stick with its own social strategy, or will it head over as well and talk to Mark Zuckerberg?

You can find 113 images of the partnership in action here. You can watch video of the new features here. You can nab the fact sheet here. You can find the whole press kit here.

Nursing Homes Seek Exemptions From Health Law

The numbers are stark. Among workers who provide hands-on care to nursing home residents, one in four has no health insurance. Among those who provide care to people living at home, one in three is uninsured.

The new health care law is supposed to fix the problem by guaranteeing access to affordable coverage for all. But many nursing homes and home care agencies, alarmed at the cost of providing health insurance to hundreds of thousands of health care workers, have started a lobbying effort seeking some kind of exemption or special treatment.

Mark Parkinson, president of the American Health Care Association, the largest trade group for nursing homes, says the problem is that reimbursement rates for Medicaid and Medicare, set by government agencies, do not pay them enough to offer their employees medical coverage. ?We do not have much ability to increase prices because we are so dependent on Medicaid and Medicare? for revenue, he said.

Mr. Parkinson acknowledged that when nursing homes do offer health insurance to employees, the benefits are often limited. The coverage ?is probably not up to what will be required? by the federal law, he said.

Medicaid covers about two-thirds of nursing home residents. States set Medicaid rates, and many states, facing severe budget problems, have reduced payments for nursing homes.

Starting in 2014, the law will require employers with 50 or more full-time employees to offer affordable coverage or risk paying a penalty. For a midsize nursing home, that penalty could easily exceed $200,000 a year. Nursing home executives are urging Congress and the Obama administration to spare them from the penalties.

Vanessa Valerio, 25, a certified nursing assistant who earns $10 an hour at Lakeview Christian Home in Carlsbad, N.M., said she was uninsured because she could not afford the coverage offered by her employer.

The chief executive of the Lakeview nursing home, Joanna D. Knox, said the company used to pay the entire premium for employees. It now requires workers to pay $25 of the $585 monthly premium for individual coverage.

?When we started charging $25 a month,? Ms. Knox said, ?many employees dropped coverage.? Of the home?s 200 employees, only 87 have elected it, she said, adding, ?I don?t know how we could possibly absorb the additional cost of providing coverage for the other employees.?

Charlene A. Harrington, a professor at the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco, said it would be a mistake for Congress or the administration to relieve nursing homes of the obligation to provide coverage to employees.

?It?s scandalous to have nursing home employees taking care of people when they themselves lack coverage and go without care,? Ms. Harrington said. ?If employees have health insurance, they are more likely to be treated for illnesses, less likely to pass on infections to nursing home residents and more likely to get early treatment for occupational injuries.?

The rate of injuries in nursing homes is about twice the rate for all occupations, according to the Labor Department. Back injuries are common among those who lift patients and help them get in and out of bed.

Since the law was signed 14 months ago, the focus of lobbying has shifted. A tumultuous battle over the future of the health care system has given way to more concentrated efforts to undo or rewrite particular provisions.

Mr. Parkinson, a former Democratic governor of Kansas who is now the top Washington lobbyist for nursing homes, is pushing several ideas.

One option would give nursing homes more time to comply with the requirement to offer coverage. Another proposal, according to a list of options prepared by lobbyists for the industry, would waive or reduce the penalties for nursing homes ?placed in financial distress as a result of the new mandates and fines.? Alternatively, Mr. Parkinson said, Congress could allow nursing homes to take tax deductions for the penalties, which under the 2010 law are nondeductible.

Gingrich Calls G.O.P.?s Medicare Plan Too Radical

Mr. Gingrich, the former speaker of the House who led a conservative resurgence in the 1990s, said the Republican Medicare plan was ?too big a jump? for Americans and compared it to the health care overhaul championed by President Obama.

?I?m against Obamacare, which is imposing radical change, and I would be against a conservative imposing radical change,? Mr. Gingrich said on the NBC program ?Meet the Press.?

?I don?t think right-wing social engineering is any more desirable than left-wing social engineering,? he said. ?I don?t think imposing radical change from the right or the left is a very good way for a free society to operate.?

The Republican plan calls for the most extensive overhaul of the Medicare program since it was created. It would end direct payment for medical care and would instead subsidize health coverage for older Americans.

While House Republicans have portrayed the plan as a way to address the nation?s long-term financial problems, Democrats and their allies have sought to seize on public concerns over it, arguing that the changes would hurt the elderly, an influential voting group.

After facing waves of protests in public meetings after introducing the Medicare proposal in early April, House Republicans have begun signaling that they are prepared to shelve it, at least for now.

In leveling criticism at the Republican Medicare proposal, Mr. Gingrich appeared to be acknowledging the political difficulties and risk of abruptly changing a highly popular entitlement program.

?I think we need a national conversation to get to a better Medicare solution for seniors,? Mr. Gingrich said, suggesting that any Medicare overhaul would have to include a system in which beneficiaries voluntarily opt out of the program.

Also on Sunday, Representative Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin, the chairman of the House Budget Committee and the author of the Medicare proposal, defended the plan during an appearance on the CNN program ?State of the Union.?

?We have got to reform this program for the next generation if we?re going to save it for the next generation, and that?s what we?re proposing to do,? Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan also addressed his own future in the interview, saying he was considering running for the seat now held by Senator Herb Kohl, a four-term Democrat from Wisconsin who announced on Friday that he would not seek re-election next year.

A Tour of Facebook?s Upcoming Ad Platform

Facebook recently sent a notification to advertisers to announce its new ad platform. Many accounts have been upgraded to the new ad system, which gives you increased access to metrics and insights that allow you to accurately see how your ad campaigns and spending are performing. The planned rollout for all advertisers is 25th May, so ahead of this we wanted to show you around the new ad platform for a preview of the new analytics you?ll be able to access. Prepare to be impressed?

    Total audience reach

Whereas before you were able to see a quick summary of the total number of people that clicked on your ad, now you will see a simple illustration that shows you how many people you have reached through your ad campaign, vs. your total potential reach. This is shown in the diagram below that splits down your total reach, social reach and targeted reach:

Edit your ads and campaigns within one screen

Facebook now presents your ads within one easy to use dashboard that also gives you complete control over your ads without needing to navigate to a separate screen to chance information such as ad budget, ad creative and campaign timings.

See how many people saw your ad

Facebook has introduced a new metric into its advertising dashboard, showing you the amount of people that saw your ad. While Facebook previously showed you impressions on an ad, this counted the total number of impressions. i.e. 1 person seeing your ad 10 times would count as 10 impressions.

Now through the ?Reach? metric (viewable on the summary diagram at the top of your Page, and the full reports below), you can see the number of individuals that saw your ad. This gives you an accurate view of the total reach of your ad, and the audience size you?ve reached purely through a branding perspective, not necessarily for who clicked on your ad:

Compare your actual to your targeted audience

When you set up your ads within Facebook you?re able to instantly see how many people you are potentially targeting, based on the information Facebook retains for its users. When it comes to referring back to your ads to optimise campaigns however, it can be difficult to compare your actual reach in relation to your potential reach. The new report now shows your total reach, so you can see how your ads are performing and how much of your potential audience you?re targeting. If this figure seems low or is dropping, you could try adjusting your budget or CPC to increase this:

    Compare clicks to connections

Facebook now presents you with one simple graph at the top of your ad report that shows you the amount of clicks your ads are receiving, versus the amount of connections. Connections are classified as an action that someone would take on the ad, for example installing an app or clicking Like. This graph allows you to see how people are actually engaging with your brand after you?ve paid for the click. If you see a large discrepancy between these two figures, you might want to look at optimising your ads:

See how many times someone saw your ad

This is a great addition by Facebook into the ad interface. You can now see how many times an individual was shown your Facebook ad based on the number of impressions. This is shown in the report under the ?frequency? column. This section gives you an average for all the users who saw your ad. You might find that this number is high if you?re targeting a very niche audience, so it might be worth changing your targeting slightly to avoid bombarding people with the same ad or sponsored story:

    Customise Graphs

Within the ad dashboard, you can quickly select a new type of graph to show that will give you basic stats on your ad campaign. Here you can select to see clicks, impressions or CTR (click through rate) for an individual ad. You can access this section by clicking into an ad from the report summary:

    Preview ad target options

When you set up ads previously, it was recommended to name these as the ad type, so you could easily scroll down the ad report to see the type of ad that was performing well, quickly. Now you can see a preview of the ad targeting options within the summary screen, by simply clicking to expand and see the ad preview alongside the ad targeting:

E-ink tablet prototype can extend itself to other units

Here is an interesting take on tablets that we haven't really seen before. An e-reader device shown off at the CHI 2011 conference in Vancouver, Canada only has one screen, but it can behave as if it has multiple.

Presented by the University of Maryland's Nicholas Chen, the tablet can connect wirelessly with other units, letting users do things like send links between devices. Furthermore, it can also clip magnetically to another unit, so you can look at two pages of the same document at the same time (you know, like a book!). Tek.Gadg has a video for you:

The device was developed in part by Microsoft Research, but you shouldn't get your hopes up. Remember, it's definitely not the first time that the software giant has shown an inclination to develop a tablet that resembles a book.

Back in September 2009, details leaked that the company was developing a new portable device, codenamed Courier. In March 2010, videos of the device were leaked, and it actually looked promising. The following month, Microsoft both confirmed the project and killed it. The innovative dual-display slate never made it past the incubation stage, let alone production.

This type of device has me excited, but not because of the multiple screens aspect: I don't think that's the solution for any type of mobile device. That being said, I do think that devices need a better way to be able to communicate with each other. BlueTooth still feels clunky to me, but I am hopeful about Wi-Fi Direct.
