HP: "we're going to become better than number one" in tablets

Hewlett-Packard, the world's largest PC manufacturer, plans to do just as well in the tablet market as it is doing in the overall PC market. In fact, the company plans to do even better.

"In the PC world, with fewer ways of differentiating HP's products from our competitors, we became number one; in the tablet world we?re going to become better than number one," HP's European head Eric Cador said at a press conference in Cannes, according to The Telegraph. "We call it number one plus."

HP is likely talking long-term as its current tablet offerings are next to none. Its upcoming webOS tablet looks solid (more information below), but it's nowhere near enough for the company to take gold, or even place in the top three.

HP completed its acquisition of Palm for $1.2 billion in July 2010. Despite suspicions by many that the company would kill webOS, so far it has done the exact opposite. In October 2010, HP officially introduced webOS 2.0, the most significant update to the platform since its launch in 2009, along with the Palm Pre 2, the first device to sport it.

Two months ago, HP announced that it plans to put webOS on all of its PCs in 2012. A beta (running in a browser on Windows) is slated for this year.

HP's webOS strategy appears to be centered on leveraging its PC business to push webOS in mobile: both on smartphones and especially on tablets. It is way too soon to tell if this will work, but if webOS is going to succeed, another mobile OS will likely end up dying a slow death.

The HP TouchPad is a 9.7-inch slate (1024 x 768 resolution), powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon APQ8060 processor, 16GB or 32GB of built-in storage, 1GB of RAM, HP's Beats audio, a micro-USB 2.0 port, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, a front-mounted 1.3MP camera, as well as a light sensor, gyroscope, accelerometer, compass, and GPS (3G model only). It measures 242 x 190 x 13.7mm and weighs around 740g. The device is running a WebOS 3.0 with true multitasking, Flash 10.1, a paneled e-mail application, a pop-up notification system like Growl, Skype support, wireless printing, calendar and e-mail integration via HP Synergy, as well as compatibility with Amazon's Kindle ebook store, Google Docs, QuickOffice, and more.

We've known for a while now that the HP TouchPad will arrive in June 2011. That being said, it's still not clear when exactly next month we'll be able to grab one, but we'll probably find out soon enough. Pricing should be $500 for the 16GB model and $600 for the 32GB model.

Tap To Chat, the iOS app for hardcore chatters, gets even better

We were impressed by Tap To Chat when it launched late last year, and the new version is even better.

This iOS app concentrated on one element of Facebook ? chat. Organised in a grid, it allowed you to keep track of, and participate in, multiple chats with your friends and contacts simultaneously. Now the app?s developers have added Google Talk and thrown a bundle of improvements into version two.

In addition to expanding beyond Facebook to offer Google Talk, the app has been given some beautiful graphical touches. While it?s active, you?ll get Growl-style notifications which pop up in the corner of the screen every time one of your contacts sends you a message or comes online. Tapping these takes you straight to the updated chat, making talking to numerous people at once simple to keep track of. When the app is running in the background, you?ll still get the standard Apple push notifications to keep you in the know.

Meanwhile, a range of colour themes have been added, there are accessibility options for visually impaired users (including VoiceOver support) and the whole experience runs noticeably faster than the original app. As with its predecessor, Tap To Chat 2 is a universal app designed to make the most of both iPhone and iPad-size screens.

Rather than being a free upgrade, the app is a separate purchase for 59p (or local equivalent), replacing the original version in the App Store. You may balk at this idea, but on it?s not exactly expensive and we?re sure many developers would charge for upgrades if Apple would let them. A free, ad-supported version of the original Facebook-only app is also still available.

It would be great to see more IM services added to the app, but if you spend a lot of time running multiple Facebook Chat or Google Talk conversations, Tap To Chat 2 is well worth trying. Find it on the App Store here.

On Our Desk - Mionix Propus 380

As you can imagine, we get lots of natty little bits and pieces sent into the bit-tech offices. Annoyingly, though, much of it is just a little too small or a little too silly to write about in a full page review. As a result, I?m trying to resurrect the On Our Desk series of articles that we used to cover all these little bits of gadgetry.

So without further ado I?ll tell you about the Mionix Propus 380 mouse mat, on which my CM Storm Inferno has been happily sitting for the last few days.

The first feature that grabbed me about the Propus 380 is that it looks good. It was actually its unusual shape and sleek, unfussy design that prompted me to pick it out from the pile of gaming mouse mats we?ve got sitting in the labs in the first place; it certainly looks like it means business.

On Our Desk - Mionix Propus 380

Once out of the packaging, I was pleasantly surprised by the build quality on show. The edges of the Propus 380 are very precisely cut, with no rough edges in sight. The upper tracking surface is also very firmly bonded to the rubber base of the mat; it certainly doesn't feel like the Propus 380 would suffer from the kind of delaminating or edge-peeling you may have seen on older mouse mats.

The surface of the mat is made from extremely fine-grained plastic, results in some very quick mouse movements. In fact, I was actually able to move my mouse almost too quickly compared to the cloth covered mat that the Propus 380 replaced, with very little drag or friction between the mouse and mat. Once I was used to it, though, the lack of friction meant that my mouse movement felt very precise, and that fatigue was less of a problem during long gaming sessions.

Measuring 380 x 260mm, the mat is wider than it is tall, but this means there?s plenty of room for large sweeping movements if you run your mouse with low sensitivity. If you don?t need all that width, though, then you can rotate the mat through 90 degrees. What's more, in this orientation, the indents in the upper and lower edge of the mat help it to butt up nearly with your keyboard.

On Our Desk - Mionix Propus 380

If you?re into your LAN gaming, then the fact that the Propus 380 doesn?t roll up could be an issue. It does have a degree of bend in it, but it'll crease if you push it too far. For most people, though, this is unlikely to be a problem, and it also means the edges of the mat won?t curl with time.

Of course, a gaming orientated mouse mat is a luxury; most decent mice these days will track quite happily without any mouse mat at all. The Propus 380 is a great piece of kit, though. It feels well made, and has a surface that provides very smooth and quick tracking for a laser mouse. At £17 it couldn?t be called cheap, but at least you feel like you?re getting £17 worth of kit; it?ll definitely be staying on my desk for the foreseeable future.

Vote on Debt Is Planned but Criticized as a Stunt

At the same time, Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. said bipartisan talks among Congressional leaders over a fiscal package that could clear the way for an increase in the debt ceiling were now focused on getting at least $1 trillion in savings, though he said new revenue would have to be part of any bargain.

?I think we?re in position where we?ll be able to get well above $1 trillion pretty quick,? Mr. Biden told reporters after an afternoon session with lawmakers.

Republicans said the decision to proceed on a debt-ceiling showdown came after repeated calls by the White House, Treasury Secretary Timothy F. Geithner and other Democrats for a straightforward vote to reassure the financial markets that political sparring over the nation?s financial health would not prevent the country from making good on its debts.

Representative Dave Camp, the Michigan Republican who is chairman of the Ways and Means Committee, introduced the measure that would increase the current limit of $14.3 trillion by $2.4 trillion, even though Mr. Camp said he had no intention of voting for his own bill.

?The legislation I filed today will allow the House to reject a clean increase in the debt limit, proving to the American people, the financial markets and the administration that we are serious about tackling our debt and deficit problems,? Mr. Camp said in a statement.

Calling the vote a stunt, leading Democrats said that having a debt-ceiling vote that was intended to fail was irresponsible and could rattle an already anxious financial community.

?My personal feeling is I think it sends a terrible message to the international community,? said Senator Harry Reid, the Nevada Democrat who is majority leader.

The Republican push comes even though the White House and Congressional Democratic leaders effectively gave up their call for a ?clean? debt-ceiling measure last month, when President Obama initiated the Biden talks to negotiate a long-term debt-reduction plan that Congress could vote on at the same time as the measure to increase the debt limit.

?Serious discussions are already under way on how to reach agreement on significant deficit reduction,? said Amy Brundage, a White House spokeswoman, ?and all responsible leaders from both parties agree that we need to extend the debt limit. That is important so that the U.S. can live up to obligations for debts the country has already incurred and so that we do not run the risk of plunging the economy into another recession.?

Mr. Biden and six Congressional leaders met for almost three hours Tuesday in the Capitol, focusing mainly on reductions in the cost of health care.

Although Democrats oppose the House Republican plan to subsidize future retirees in private health care plans, party leaders say some changes in Medicare could be made.

?I have said it over and over again, everything needs to be on the table,? said Representative Steny H. Hoyer of Maryland, the No. 2 Democrat. ?Medicare is one of the things that needs to be on the table.?

Some Democrats worry that a deal that makes any significant changes could blunt the political edge Democrats have gained by stirring opposition to the proposal by Representative Paul D. Ryan, Republican of Wisconsin and chairman of the Budget Committee.

Republicans disputed the idea that the markets would react badly to the House vote. They noted that votes to raise the debt limit have failed at least nine times in Congress since 1975 without causing a financial calamity, though in most of those cases the increase was approved soon after the defeat.

?If Senator Reid is angry, he should call up Secretary Geithner and the 110-plus House Democrats who have demanded a vote on the clean debt extension and express his displeasure,? said Brad Dayspring, a spokesman for Representative Eric Cantor, the Virginia Republican and House majority leader.

While Democrats were complaining about House Republicans? forcing a vote on a measure they know will not pass, they were moving ahead with their own plans to require Senate Republicans to vote on a Republican budget certain to fail.

Mr. Reid said he intended to bring to the floor this week the House-passed budget that includes the contentious plan to overhaul Medicare, because it had ?quickly become the defining principle of the Republican Party.?

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the Republican leader, said Mr. Reid was playing politics while the serious budget negotiations were taking place under the leadership of Mr. Biden.

Decorum Breaks Down at House Hearing

Representative Patrick T. McHenry, a North Carolina Republican who is chairman of a subcommittee of the House oversight committee, told Ms. Warren, who is directing the start of the consumer agency, that he believed she had misled Congress about her role in settlement talks between government authorities and mortgage servicing companies.

Ms. Warren denied Mr. McHenry?s accusation, saying that she clearly stated in March that she had provided advice to officials of the Treasury and Justice Departments about their investigations of fraud among mortgage-servicing companies and about their settlement discussions with the companies.

The argument was a rare collapse of the decorum that usually pervades discussions among even the most fervent opponents on Capitol Hill. It demonstrated the level of frustration some Republicans apparently have over the consumer agency, its leadership and its authority as established by the Dodd-Frank Act that followed the financial and mortgage crisis.

After an hour in which Ms. Warren repeatedly parried efforts by Mr. McHenry and other Republicans to pin her down with ?yes or no? answers to questions about her March testimony ? and about the bureau?s powers and responsibilities ? Mr. McHenry abruptly moved for a temporarily recess so lawmakers could attend a floor vote.

Ms. Warren objected, saying that she had agreed to be present for only an hour and had no more time. Mr. McHenry disagreed and said that other subcommittee members still had questions for her.

A vigorous back and forth ensued.

?Congressman, you are causing problems,? Ms. Warren said. ?We had an agreement.?

?You?re making this up,? Mr. McHenry replied, eliciting gasps from the audience. ?This is not the case.?

As Mr. McHenry and Ms. Warren traded accusations, a senior Democrat, Representative Elijah Cummings of Maryland, tried to smooth things over. ?Mr. Chairman,? he said, ?I?m trying to be cordial here ? you just accused the lady of lying. You need to clear this up with your staff.?

Mr. McHenry did not back down. After the meeting broke, he said in a statement: ?I was shocked by Ms. Warren?s blatant sense of entitlement. She was apparently under the assumption that she could dictate a one-hour time limit for her testimony to Congress, and that we were there at her behest instead of the other way around.  This is just further example of her disregard for Congressional oversight.?

The hearing was intended to address how much supervision Congress should require for the agency. Republicans have introduced bills to eliminate some of the bureau?s independence; for example, the bureau is not subject to Congressional appropriations. A group of 44 Republican senators recently signed a letter saying they would not allow a director of the agency to be confirmed unless the Obama administration agreed to structural changes in the agency.

Faced with strong opposition to Ms. Warren, a Harvard professor, President Obama has not nominated her to lead the new bureau. In fact, officials in the Democratic Party are trying to pressure her to return to Massachusetts to run for the United States Senate in 2012.

While there were some questions about oversight, Ms. Warren apparently came to the hearing expecting a hostile reception on other topics. On Tuesday morning, hours before the afternoon hearing, Mr. McHenry said on CNBC that he believed she had lied to Congress.

?I question the veracity of her former testimony in relation to the reality that we now see,? he said, referring to documents indicating that the consumer bureau had advised the Iowa attorney general on the terms of a possible settlement between federal and state regulators and mortgage servicing companies.

Asked by the CNBC correspondent if that meant she had been lying when she said she was only an adviser, Mr. McHenry replied, ?Sure.?

During the hearing, Mr. McHenry displayed the documents, which he said indicated that Ms. Warren?s involvement extended outside her designated role as an adviser to the president and the Treasury secretary to set up the new consumer bureau.

?You said you were providing advice to the Treasury secretary,? Mr. McHenry said. ?Now it is apparent that you were providing advice to the attorney general of Iowa,? regarding lawsuits against mortgage servicers.

Ms. Warren said she provided advice to state and federal agencies at the direction of the Treasury secretary, adding that she had been open about her meetings and involvement in the talks. She said she had provided that information two months ago in response to a letter from House members and had heard nothing back since then.

Those exchanges led a Democrat on the subcommittee to apologize ?for the rude and disrespectful behavior of the chair.? Representative John Yarmuth, a Kentucky Democrat, said to Ms. Warren that Mr. McHenry?s accusation ?indicates to me that this hearing is all about you, because people are afraid of you and your ability to communicate in very clear terms the threats to our consumers.?

Gaming 26 - The Showman's Bag

Posted on 13th May 2011 at 12:17 by Podcast with 16 comments

This week Paul and Joe were joined by plughead.net founder and former PC Zone writer David Brown. First up on the agenda was the continuing PSN outage, and how the continuing lack of service is starting to affect games developers.

We also attempted to talk about the Witcher 2, but somehow we ended up on the topic of DLC and, unsurprisingly, Mass Effect 2. Joe also got a chance to talk about his experiences with Star Wars: The Old Republic, and why he thought the game deserved the savaging that he gave it.

Finally, we also got a chance to put a few of your questions to David who discussed everything from the future of print publishing to the pressure that games publishers and developers put on members of the games press.

As always, we've also set up our weekly competition too, the lucky winner of which will walk away with a Roccat Vire Gaming Headset. The headset weighs only 15g and comes complete with a carry bag and rubberised ergonomic earplugs.

As ever, the bit-tech hardware podcast features music by Brad Sucks, and was recorded on Shure microphones. You can download the podcast direct, listen in-browser or subscribe through iTunes using the links below. Also, be sure to let us know your thoughts about the discussion in the forums.

Microsoft announces Windows Phone 7.1

Microsoft today announced and previewed Windows Phone 7.1 (codenamed Mango), which the company says will include over 500 new features. Frankly, with everything that is in the update, we're surprised it's not called Windows Phone 8.

The Mango release will be available for free to Windows Phone 7 customers and is scheduled to ship on new phones beginning this fall. Details on device update timing will be provided closer to availability.

Microsoft has a lot slated for Windows Phone. In terms of communications, the company wants to make it easier to connect and share with the following five main features:

  • Threads ? Switch between text, Facebook chat, and Windows Live Messenger within the same conversation.
  • Groups ? Group contacts into personalized Live Tiles to see the latest status updates right from the Start Screen and quickly send a text, email, or IM to the whole group.
  • Deeper social network integration ? Twitter and LinkedIn feeds are now integrated into contact cards, and Mango includes built-in Facebook check-ins and new face detection software that makes it easier to quickly tag photos and post to the Web.
  • Linked inbox ? See multiple email accounts in one linked inbox. Conversations are organized to make it easy to stay on top of the latest mail.
  • Hands-free messaging ? Built-in voice-to-text and text-to-voice support enables hands-free texting or chatting.

Microsoft wants to integrate apps directly into the core experiences of the phone. In addition to making it easy to get timely notifications and updates from apps right from the Start Screen, the Mango release will also surface apps as part of search results and within Windows Phone Hubs. Here are the three main app improvements that are coming:

  • App Connect ? By connecting apps to search results and deepening their integration with Windows Phone Hubs, including Music and Video and Pictures, Mango allows apps to be surfaced when and where they make sense.
  • Improved Live Tiles ? Get real-time information from apps without having to open them. Live Tiles can be more dynamic and hold more information.
  • Multitasking ? Quickly switch between apps in use and allow apps to run in the background, helping to preserve battery life and performance.

As for the browser, IE9 is coming. The Mango release will connect the Web to the unique capabilities of Windows Phones, such as location awareness, camera, and access to apps. Here are four online enhancements to look forward to:

  • Internet Explorer 9 ? A browser based on the powerful Internet Explorer 9 and including support for HTML5 and full hardware acceleration.
  • Local Scout ? Provides hyperlocal search results and recommends nearby restaurants, shopping, and activities in an easy-to-use guide.
  • Bing on Windows Phone ? More ways to search the Web, including Bing Vision, Music Search and Voice so it's easy to discover and decide.
  • Quick Cards ? When searching for a product, movie, event or place, see a quick summary of relevant information, including related apps.

On top of all this, Microsoft has announced new OEM partners: Acer, Fujitsu, and ZTE. Of course, Nokia is also on board, as are the existing manufacturers Samsung, HTC, and LG. Curiously, Dell, which currently makes the Venue Pro, was not mentioned anywhere.

Microsoft also took the opportunity to declare that there are now more than 17,000 apps available on Windows Phone Marketplace. Access to apps will be expanded by launching Windows Phone Marketplace in new countries.

Support for additional languages is also being added. Microsoft has confirmed it will support the following additional languages: Brazilian Portuguese, Simplified and Traditional Chinese, Czech, Danish, Dutch, Finnish, Greek, Hungarian, Japanese, Korean, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, and Swedish.

Last but not least, a beta release of the free Windows Phone Developer tools, which will be used to create the next generation of Mango apps and games, should be posted as a public download to Microsoft's website by tomorrow. It's odd that Microsoft doesn't have it ready yet, but it's possible the company wants to draw out the hype around this update.

"Seven months ago we started our mission to make smartphones smarter and easier for people to do more," Andy Lees, president of the Mobile Communications Business at Microsoft, said in a statement. "With 'Mango,' Windows Phone takes a major step forward in redefining how people communicate and use apps and the Internet, giving you better results with less effort."

How Companies Are Using Data from Foursquare

When Foursquare began, it was easy to wonder what the point was beyond the game. It asked people to "check in" when visiting places like shops, bars, or restaurants and then gave them a chance to compete for virtual prizes, like badges and recognition as "mayor" after visiting a place more than anyone else. Now, with more than nine million users, Foursquare is beginning to prove its value to businesses. It is becoming the rare social-media service that lets them directly analyze whether promotions lead to sales.

Take RadioShack, a company aiming to survive the price wars in consumer electronics by driving in-store sales. It first partnered with Foursquare last August to offer a 10 percent discount to anyone who checked in on a phone at one of its locations and 20 percent to any RadioShack "mayor." By analyzing the resulting data, RadioShack found that Foursquare users generally spend 3.5 times as much as non-users per transaction. Also, they often buy wireless devices and accessories, products that lend themselves to repeat purchases.

After the initial promotion and a successful holiday campaign, the company launched a "newbie special" to target more Foursquare shoppers. Those who had never checked in at RadioShack before would receive a 20 percent discount on some purchases. The technology works in such a way that people who open the app on their phones can see the specials in their vicinity. According to RadioShack's social-media director, Adrian Parker, 50 to 60 percent of transactions by Foursquare users have been prompted by this campaign. The costs of such promotions on Foursquare are minimal, and the results are measured in dollars, not nebulous terms such as customers' level of "engagement." "We've seen excellent returns on our investment," Parker says.

Foursquare now provides its merchant platform to more than 300,000 businesses, which can track their customers through a newly launched analytics dashboard. Merchants can analyze various metrics over time, including how many check-ins are recorded each day, who the most recent and most frequent visitors are, how visitors who check in break down by gender, and what time of day the most people check in; businesses with multiple locations can aggregate statistics to fit their needs. Foursquare provides the same platform "for Joe's coffee shop and Starbucks," says Eric Friedman, Foursquare's director of business development, but companies use the tools and data in different ways, depending on their specific objectives. "Some people are using it directly to measure [differences between] top-performing stores and low-performing stores," Friedman says. Others might track geographic differences.

Zynga to file for IPO in the next two weeks

Zynga will be filing for an IPO with the Securities and Exchange Commission in the next two weeks, according to sources cited by AllThingsD.

While the company?s valuation was previously estimated at around $10 billion, it is very likely that this number could skyrocket once it hits the public markets. The social gaming company is one of several Internet companies expected to go public in the next two years, along with Groupon and Facebook. The success of the LinkedIn IPO is definitely pushing Zynga and other social media startups to cash in while the market is hot.

Given how the company has quickly morphed into one of the most important forces in online gaming, largely via distribution on the Facebook platform, Zynga stock is going to be a catch. According to the sources, Goldman Sachs will be among the lead bankers in the Zynga offering.

Zynga boasts 250 million monthly active users with their largest game, CityVille, attracting over 90 million monthly users each month. The company reportedly generated about $400 million in profit last year.
