Twitter changes fonts, ?Who to Follow? and more

It started with just some slight changes to the width of the detail panel in New Twitter, but digging deeper we?ve found some other changes as well. Here?s a rundown of the new things that we?ve spotted today. Have you seen them yet?

Thinner Details Pane

In New Twitter, the right side is now a bit thinner, offering a bit more real estate to the main tweets versus the context information.

Smaller Fonts

What?s notable, though, is that there?s a difference in how the fonts appear. For OS X users, they?re still quite legible and clean. Windows users, unfortunately, see something quite different.

As you can see, the font of choice isn?t quite as nicely rendered as it is in OS X.

Who To Follow

The Who to Follow feature now works a bit different, too. Instead of just showing you people who might want to follow based on who you already do, it now shows accounts that are followed by people who you follow:

Direct Messages

Oh yes, one more little tweak for your Friday Twitter sessions ? the DM button has changed. Instead of being labeled as ?Message?, it?s now an email-like icon:

The Caucus: Palin to Begin Public Tour This Weekend

1:59 p.m. | Updated Sarah Palin will begin a bus tour of the East Coast on Memorial Day weekend, the latest and most significant evidence that the former governor of Alaska is still seriously considering a run for the Republican presidential nomination this year.

Ms. Palin will begin the series of high-profile public events in the Washington area, starting with the annual Rolling Thunder motorcycle rally and continuing on through the Northeast, according to a statement on her Web site.

Her purchase of a house in Arizona and recent additions to her staff have prompted renewed speculation about her political intentions even as the field of Republicans who are vying to challenge President Obama has dwindled in recent weeks.

The bus tour, which will extend beyond the weekend, will take Ms. Palin and her family through the Northeast in a decorated, red-white-and-blue charter bus, heightening comparisons to a campaign whistle-stop tour.

One source familiar with the trip said Ms. Palin would make a stop in New Hampshire, the state that holds the first presidential primary. But such a stop, if it happens, could complicate efforts to describe the events as something other than the beginnings of a presidential exploratory campaign.

With the announcement, Ms. Palin proved once again her outsize ability to seize the political spotlight while simultaneously depriving her potential rivals of much-needed news media oxygen.

Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota was said to be ramping up toward an announcement that she will run for president as early as next week. Mitt Romney, the former governor of Massachusetts, is due in Iowa on Friday for his first appearance there this year.

But it is Ms. Palin and the start of her bus tour that is now sure to command the attention of a political press corps that has been anxious to know her intentions for the 2012 campaign.

Ms. Palin, who exploded onto the national political scene in 2008 as the running mate of Senator John McCain of Arizona, has remained coy on whether she will run on her own in 2012. She has made sporadic forays into the public debate via her Facebook page and Twitter feeds, and she has maintained a steady stream of conservative commentary as a paid analyst for Fox News.

Ms. Palin?s bus tour raised questions about her deal as a paid analyst on Fox News Channel, which suspended ? and later terminated ? the contracts of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich and former Senator Rick Santorum of Pennsylvania when they made it clear they were moving ahead with presidential plans.

Sarah Palin

An interactive timeline of the life and career of former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin.

Fox News has laid out a specific set of actions that would lead it to determine one of its analysts is seriously considering a campaign, including starting an exploratory committee, appearing at debates, or, obviously, outright declaring a candidacy.

In a brief statement released Thursday, the Fox News executive vice president of programming Bill Shine indicated the network did not believe the bus tour would cross that threshold: ?We are not changing Sarah Palin?s status,?? it read.

In a statement on her Web site, Ms. Palin hinted at the kinds of themes that will be highlighted by the bus tour ? and that could power a presidential campaign.

?Our nation is at a critical turning point,? she wrote. ?As we look to the future, we are propelled by America?s past. It?s imperative that we connect with our founders, our patriots, our challenges and victories to clearly see our way forward. A good way to do this is to appreciate the significance of our nation?s historic sites, patriotic events and diverse cultures.?

Ms. Palin said the tour will ?celebrate the meaning of our nation?s blueprints? and said the ?pro-America? events were designed to touch on, among other things, the ?survival of American exceptionalism,? a topic that she has used to criticize Mr. Obama in the past.

The trip has clearly been in the works for some time. Pictures on the Web site show the dark blue bus emblazoned with the logo ?One Nation,? with the Liberty Bell as the ?a? in ?Nation.? (View the photos.)

It also shows an enlarged copy of the Constitution with the words ?We the People? on the side and the words ?Join the Fundamental Restoration of America? on the back.

Moments after the tour was announced, Ms. Palin?s Web site also sought to raise money for her political action committee. Visiting the site now prompts a pop-up window asking for donations.

?SarahPAC is excited to announce the One Nation Tour,? the site says. ?You can show support for the ?Fundamental Restoration of America? and the One Nation bus tour by making a generous donation to SarahPAC today and following the bus tour every step of the way on our SarahPAC Web site.?

Her Web site adds that the ??One Nation Tour? is part of our new campaign to educate and energize Americans about our nation?s founding principles, in order to promote the Fundamental Restoration of America.?

Zotac preps two Z68-based Mini-ITX motherboards

Zotac's ever-expanding range of pint-sized motherboards is about to get a little bigger. According to various reports, the company is preparing to unveil two new Mini-ITX motherboards based on Intel's latest desktop chipset during this year's Computex technology conference, which kicks off next Tuesday, May 31 and runs through Saturday, June 4.

Known as the Z68ITX-WiFi (rough MSRP of $244) and Z68 GT430 ITX-WiFi ($295), both boards are brimming with features, including an unoccupied LGA1155 processor socket, two SATA 3Gb/s and 6Gb/s ports, an assortment of USB 2.0 and 3.0 ports and headers, Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and 7.1-channel audio with an optical S/PDIF output.

Despite their similarities, each board has its own perks. The former offers a second Gigabit Ethernet jack, two HDMI outputs and a Mini DisplayPort connector, and a spare PCI Express x16 slot. Additionally, the Z68ITX-WiFi has a pair of full-size DDR3 DIMM slots and passive cooling enabling a silent machine with the right CPU heatsink and case fans.

Conversely, the latter comes with an embedded Nvidia GeForce GT 430 graphics processor that relies on heatsink and fan combo for cooling. It loses the second network and HDMI ports, but gains two DVI outputs, one eSATA port, and a full-size DisplayPort connector. It also "downgrades" to an open-ended PCI Express x4 slot and DDR3 SO-DIMM slots.

Homebrew hack finally allows for screen capture on WP7

Perhaps the most annoying, niggling problem that remains in the Windows Phone 7 platform today is the lack of ability for a user to take a screenshot.

You might think that something so simple would have been officially corrected, but you would be wrong. Happily, at the hands of the excellent homebrew community, a solution has been created.

As with everything homebrew, this new tool requires some technological know-how, so proceed with caution. If you brick your phone, TNW is sorry, but is not at fault. That aside, you are going to need to have the Jaxbot Dehydrate hack in place on your phone. This will enable fast app switching. It?s dead useful, but again, be careful.

Once you have that installed and set up, head here to snag the actual application, and then follow these steps:

  1. Open up the app
  2. Navigate to the app/screen you want to capture (no more than 2 apps in between (this app will be killed by ?Watchdog?))
  3. Hold ?focus? (not click, >focus), for at least 500ms
  4. Wait for message box to verify capture
  5. (SUCCESS) > Located under ?Pictures > All > Saved Pictures?
  6. According to followup comments on the XDA forums, the app works as promised. Sound off in the comments if you went through with the installation, and tell us how it went.

We wonder why Microsoft just won?t solve this feature-gap themselves, but hey, this is why we love third-party guys, right?

Thoughts on Jumping

It may seem an odd subject to focus on, as jumping doesn't seem to be very important on the face of it ? cut it out of a game, though, and it can make a huge difference. Games in which players can?t jump, or at the very least dodge or roll, can seem painfully slow, dull and static. Games in which players can jump around and use that movement to interact with the environment can seem immeasurably more fun because of it.

Take Half-Life 2, for example. It?s a game which nearly everyone would agree is well-made, decently written, fun and fast to play through. Now cast your mind back to the first scene in Kliener?s lab, where Gordon is first properly introduced to his allies, where the plot is given its first proper push and where you?re gifted with the HEV suit again. It?s a busy sequence; lots to do, lots to take in. You?d expect most players to pay close attention, at least the first time around.

Instead, every single player I know spends most of the time jumping around. Sometimes they try to jump on the scenery or knock over objects, other times they just leapfrog around the room when a simple stroll would suffice.

The same behaviour holds true in most other games too, I?ve found. When I played Beyond Good and Evil for the first time I hardly walked anywhere across the surface of Hillys; I rolled. In Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time, any hallway that involved walking for more than two seconds would be punctuated by periodic bounding. It seems like aberrant behaviour at first, yet it seems as though everyone does it. Why?

The reason, I think, is actually more to do with player speed than actually jumping. It?s not that people always like to move fast through games or that they enjoy spending time off the ground. Instead, it comes back to the original point ? games that don?t feature jumping can feel static and slow, so we use these features if they're present to help negate this effect. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a pretty fast-paced game, but running down a long corridor can still feel dull and empty; jumping as you run lets you vary the speed of the game. It creates tiny events of player agency and interaction, which stave off that staid feeling.

At the same time, adventure games that don?t feature anything so much as a sprint button? Don?t they seem increasingly slow and dated these days?

This isn?t the only reason why jumping is important, though. It helps you practice for later. It can be used to ward off boredom. It helps you to further explore the game space away from the key features. There's an abundance of smaller reasons; not least of which is possibly the fact that some people just have twitchy thumbs.

For the best games, though ? and this ties into a more overarching theory of mine about character speed ? the act of jumping can be a joy in itself. Master Chief?s jump, for example, is pleasantly floaty, while Dante?s can last for as long as you can hammer the attack buttons. Faith?s standing jump in Mirror?s Edge, however, is realistically awkward; she?s much better with running leaps.

Getting these nuances of player speed correct is one of the most subtle and important aspects of making a good game, especially for first person shooters. Trust me, I play a lot of really rubbish games and I can tell you that, if you throw all the cleverness away and boil it down to basic functionality, Half-Life 2 would still stand above Conspiracy Island 2 based solely on player speed. And the quality of the jumping.

Blog - Wave of Superfluous New Startups Is Surest Sign We're in a Bubble

This is not a headline from the Onion:

New Apps Aim for Social Serendipity In Real Life

And the author is completely serious when he says:

[A] new wave of apps aim to help people create spontaneous connections when they arrive at specific locations, giving rise to temporary social networks that are built around a place and a time.

Temporary social networks ... built around a place and a time. Like going to a party and talking to people? Asking your neighbors how they're doing when you run into them at the dog park?

The charitable way of looking at startups like Karizma, "a location based video chat messenger that banks on the theory that people want to video chat with people who are geographically close to them," or Sonar, which allows people to "connect with others right around them for [...] live interactions," is to say that they have the potential to connect us to other people in a manner totally unlike, say, Facebook. That is: in real life.

But let's be honest, this is insane. The way to connect with people in real life is ... to connect with them in real life. As commenter Ken put it:

I can clearly understand social groups via the internet. But, if I was within 300 feet of somebody, would it not be easier to just socialize face to face, like we used to do? I guess my idea of a temporary social network built around a place and a time involves human interaction. Otherwise, I am not clear of the importance of the place component. It kind of seems a little bit like a solution in search of a problem.

The fact that startups designed to replace real-life interaction with other human beings are a trend worthy of angel investment does not bode well for the immediate future of web startups. Or maybe it does, because it means in this climate, any idea can get funded?

Of course I could be completely wrong, and for the most sinister of reasons: perhaps a generation of young people raised entirely on mediated interactions (elaborately curated status updates, text messages and shared photos) will lose the ability to perform the social and conversational rituals required to connect with people in meatspace. In which case it would absolutely make sense that they might use their Foursquare checkin to identify potential Facebook connections via Sonar, and then chat with them on Karizma. But god help us if it comes to that.

This week at Microsoft: Skype, Mango, and Zune

It?s been one of those weeks in the world of Microsoft when every day has been oddly distinct, making all the news hard to keep straight. The week started slow, banged into a wall of Mango, went Skype crazy, moved next to an attempted corporate assassination of CEO Steven Ballmer, and concluded with HTC news.

The Skype news was especially odd as Microsoft and the telecom giant are still operating as distinct companies. That Microsoft was implicated at all was pure ignorance.

We?re digging into our usual four top stories in just a second, but be sure to follow us on Twitter before you read any further. Done? Then let?s get into it.

Skype Goes Down, Following Microsoft?s Stock Price

If you missed the whole fiasco, which is quite unlikely, Skype did a dip into the world of downtime this week, sending every remote information worker into a fit of terror. Something like that, at least.

This affected Skype clients on Linux, OS X, and Windows, leaving few immune to the issue. Skype had to release a workaround, which only partially worked, and later an update to the software itself.

If you were wondering just how important Skype is to the modern economy, this was a clear demonstration. Maybe Microsoft didn?t buy an albatross after all.

Zune To Disintegrate? False Alarm!

There have been rumors floating for months that Microsoft is set to break up the Zune brand and spread its assets all over its empire. While we here at TNWmicrosoft oppose such an action, it seems likely enough.

It?s just a question of when, sadly.

And so when a source began to claim that at the Mango release party (more in a second on that), Zune was finally going to find its head on the chopping block, we took notice. Happily, Zune lives to fight another day. Thanks, Microsoft, for not killing one of your better product ecosystems.

What will likely happen to Zune? Let?s hope that the Live team doesn?t get their hands on it, but it could be completely integrated into the world of Xbox. Zune pass would likely merge into Xbox LIVE memberships, and so forth. It?s not the worst future, but we still prefer Zune top be its own ship with its own captain. If only we ran the world, right?

Mango, The Curtain Drops

Mango. At last. That was the tale on every set of lips this past Tuesday, as Microsoft lifted the curtain and bared the chest of Mango, exposing its features and future for all to see.

Instead of even trying to get you through the whole ordeal in just another 100 words, we are going to guide you to where you can find what you want to know:

There you have it folks, all the Mango that you can handle. There are, reportedly, more pieces of the software to come, but we are not sure at the current moment when they can be expected to surface. The following shot is from the event:

Windows 8 Tablet UI Just Around the Corner

This was a rare news item in that it actually managed to break not once, but two times in the same week. Don?t ask us why, we have no idea either.

Anyway, at the coming D9 event, Microsoft is now all but certain to show off the ?immersive? tablet UI that is set to take a large role in Windows 8, and the future of the company?s software design. This is big stuff.

If Microsoft manages to wow the market with what it has in coming up in Win8, it could push its lagging stock up a notch, and take some of the pressure off of its CEO, who is suffering from calls that he should step down.

But if the company flops, and what they demonstrate is weak, or merely mediocre, Microsoft will suffer a slap from every angle; it is time that the firm got its tablet house in order.

That is all for this week. As always, more as it comes. Did you know that TNWmicrosoft is on Facebook? You should link up with us!

A Gas Power Plant to Make Renewables More Practical

General Electric announced on Thursday that it's designed a gas-fired combined-cycle power plant that can start up rapidly. The goal is to help electricity grids adapt to the variability of renewable energy.

With a small but growing proportion of electricity in Europe being supplied by wind and solar power, grid operators need new ways to deal with fluctuations in supply. The supply from solar drops dramatically at night, while wind installations only provide power when the wind is blowing. GE's new plant can ramp up electricity generation at a rate of more than 50 megawatts a minute?twice the rate of current industry benchmarks. The plant can start from scratch in less than 30 minutes.

GE is testing a pilot plant at its facility in Greenville, South Carolina, but the plant won't come into operation any earlier than 2015.

The plant will have a base load fuel efficiency of 61 percent, higher than other gas combined-cycle power plants. A base load power plant is one that's dedicated to providing a continuous supply of energy. Nuclear and coal plants commonly provide base load power. Such plants offer relatively cheap energy, but they can take hours or days to start up, which isn't fast enough to meet fluctuations in supply from renewables.

GE's 510-megawatt plant design is the result of a $500 million investment by the company. It features new, more efficient gas and steam turbines, as well as a new integrated electronic control system.

Paul Browning, vice president of GE Thermal Products, said at Thursday's announcement that the plant uses nickel-based super alloys, which are used in aircraft engines, because they can withstand the high temperatures inside the plant. The new turbines can ramp up quickly, much as a jet engine can ramp up quickly to provide thrust for takeoff.

GE estimates that the new technology could save some power utilities $2.6 million a year under typical operating conditions. The company also says the plants could cut annual carbon-dioxide emissions by more than 12,700 metric tons, with an annual fuel savings of 6.4 million cubic meters of natural gas.

The new plant has a power frequency of 50 hertz, meaning it can be built in Europe and many other parts of the world, but not in North America. GE says it will announce a 60 hertz version for the U.S. market at a later date.

Jim Watson, director of the energy group at Sussex University, says he's impressed by the enhanced flexibility of the plant. "This is just the kind of plant we need," he says. "It's not a low-carbon technology, but it could be part of a low-carbon system."

Museum project lets you control a human from your browser

Virtual tours have been a staple of museum websites for years, but how about an actual tour in real-time, right from your browser? That?s what the MAS museum in Antwerp, Belgium is currently offering.

The museum has five guides, one standing on each floor of the museum with a live-streaming video camera. From the website you?re able to direct a guide so you can take a look at what each gallery has to offer. As you click the arrow icons on the screen, the guide hears your commands through headphones and will move to accordingly.

The project (described, a little awkwardly, as a ?Phygital tour?) has been designed by digital agency Prophets in order to encourage a global audience to visit the museum for real after getting a taste online.

It?s a great idea, although we had mixed results when we tried it here at The Next Web. One of us had it working fine, another found the video stream a bit jittery and another just got a big grey box, despite having an up-to-date browser.

Still, it?s well worth giving a go and we?d love to see more of this kind of thing, even if it is quite labour intensive for the people taking commands from faceless Web users all day. The live tours run until 7 June. You can try the tour yourself here.
